Student answer (Band 6.0)

Nowadays, it is clear that many people are debating with the idea of the age for starting to use digital materials, theatres , culture and cinemas are no longer important because everyone has the option to watch everything they want on their phone, whilst others still value the importance of theatres and cinemas for the economy and the culture of the country.

On one hand, it is true that a large part of the population agrees with the facility and the simple access that we have to discover everything we are looking for on our phone or computer without having a financial cost, or losing time going to the cinema or theatre, as well. For example, a survey conducted by the University of Lisbon and published by the famous Scientific Journal, in 2024, proves that 90% of the population agrees with the progress of online access , offering the possibility to watch movies and theatrical scenes.

On the other hand, many citizens agree that it is important to take into account the culture of the country and the history that is represented in many typical movies, or comedies , but also in theatrical scenes. While I agree that cinemas and theatres are essential for our society and for our future. In addition, a large variety of people are looking for typical movies that they can watch in a comfortable place, other than their home. For instance, in the United States, the government has established some rules to offer the opportunity to go to the cinema for free, one day a week.

To conclude, although many people believe that online access to everything is important, I believe that physical cultural places and areas are fundamental for our society and for our future.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 6.0

The response addresses both views and provides a clear personal opinion in the conclusion. However, the development of ideas is somewhat limited. While you mention economic and cultural importance, the arguments remain quite general. For instance, the example regarding the US government offering free cinema access is a bit vague and lacks a clear connection to the broader argument about the cultural value of these spaces. To improve, ensure that your supporting points are more deeply explored and directly linked to the prompt's core themes of economic and cultural significance. The introduction is also slightly cluttered with unnecessary phrasing, which makes the initial position less sharp.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 6.0

The essay is organized into logical paragraphs, and there is a clear progression of ideas. You use basic cohesive devices such as 'On one hand,' 'On the other hand,' and 'To conclude' to signal shifts in the argument. However, some transitions feel a bit mechanical, and the internal cohesion within paragraphs could be improved. For example, the sentence 'While I agree that cinemas and theatres are essential for our society and for our future' is a sentence fragment that lacks a main clause, which disrupts the flow of your argument. Improving the variety of linking words and ensuring all sentences are complete will help your writing feel more cohesive.

Lexical Resource — Band 6.0

You demonstrate an adequate range of vocabulary for the task, using terms like 'digital age,' 'economically,' and 'culturally.' However, there are instances of imprecise word choice and awkward phrasing, such as 'debating with the idea of the age for starting to use digital materials' and 'facility and the simple access.' These phrases sound unnatural and slightly obscure the intended meaning. To reach a higher band, focus on using collocations more accurately and avoiding overly wordy or convoluted expressions. Expanding your vocabulary to include more precise academic terminology would also be beneficial.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 5.5

The essay contains a mix of simple and complex sentence structures, but there are frequent grammatical errors that occasionally affect readability. Issues include incorrect preposition usage ('debating with the idea'), punctuation errors (unnecessary spaces before commas), and sentence fragments ('While I agree that...'). Additionally, some sentences are overly long and lack clear grammatical structure, such as the opening sentence. While these errors do not completely impede communication, they are persistent. Focusing on sentence boundary control and ensuring that every sentence has a clear subject and verb will significantly improve your accuracy.
