Student answer (Band 6.5)

In digital age, many people argue that cinema and theatres are becoming unnecessary as entertainment is easily available online. However, others believe that these places has their own charm and charisma and are still important. In my opinion, although online entertainment is more convenient, yet theatres and cinemas continue to play a vital role in society.

On the one hand, watching entertainment online has several advantages. People can access thousand of films, series and programs from their houses using platforms such as netflix, prime, and many more. This is convenient as viewers can choose the type of entertainment they want to want at any time without paying any travel expenses. Moreover, online entertainment is cheaper and less time consuming.

On the other hand, I believe cinemas and theatres provide experiences and nostalgia that cannot be replaced by any digital medium. Watching entertainment on a large screen with loud music and high quality sound can be more immersive. In addition to this, theatres provide audience a chance to watch live performances and to interact with performers emotionally. Furthermore, cinemas and theatres are places where you can spend a quality time with your friends and family. This social experience is difficult to reproduce when people watch entertainment alone at home.

In conclusion, I agree that digital platforms have made entertainment more convenient and affordable, but I strongly disagree that cinemas and theatres have become irrelevant. They provide immersive and social experiences, so I believe both traditional and digital forms of entertainment are important in the modern world.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 6.5

You have addressed all parts of the prompt, discussing both perspectives and providing a clear personal opinion. The ideas are relevant and logically developed, particularly the contrast between the convenience of digital platforms and the immersive, social nature of traditional venues. To reach a higher band, you could further extend your arguments by providing more specific examples, such as mentioning the economic impact of local cinemas on small businesses or the cultural significance of theatre festivals. The position is consistent throughout the essay, and the conclusion effectively synthesizes your main points.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 6.5

The essay is well-organized with a clear introduction, body paragraphs, and a conclusion. Each paragraph has a central theme, and the progression of ideas is logical. You use cohesive devices such as 'On the one hand', 'Moreover', and 'Furthermore' to link your points effectively. However, the use of some connectors is slightly mechanical. To improve, try to vary your linking phrases and ensure that the transition between the digital convenience argument and the social experience argument is more fluid. Overall, the paragraphing is appropriate and contributes to the clarity of your argument.

Lexical Resource — Band 6.0

You demonstrate a sufficient range of vocabulary to discuss the topic with some precision, using terms like 'immersive', 'nostalgia', and 'irrelevant'. There are some minor issues with word choice, such as 'want to want' (likely a typo for 'watch') and 'charm and charisma' which is slightly repetitive in this context. While the vocabulary is adequate for the task, incorporating more sophisticated collocations or topic-specific terminology (e.g., 'cinematic experience', 'cultural heritage', or 'digital accessibility') would help elevate your score. Spelling is generally accurate, though capitalization of proper nouns like 'Netflix' and 'Prime' should be consistent.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 6.0

You use a mix of simple and complex sentence structures, which is appropriate for this level. There are some grammatical errors, such as subject-verb agreement ('these places has' should be 'these places have') and missing articles ('In digital age' should be 'In the digital age'). Additionally, the sentence 'although online entertainment is more convenient, yet theatres and cinemas continue...' is grammatically redundant because 'although' and 'yet' should not be used together in this structure. Despite these errors, your meaning is always clear, and the punctuation is generally well-handled.
