Some people say that in the digital age, theatres and cinemas are no longer important as people can watch all the entertainment they want online. Others argue that theatres and cinemas are still important both economically and culturally.

Discuss both these views and give your own opinion.

Give reasons for your answer and include any relevant examples from your own knowledge or experience.

Student answer (Band 6.0)

Due to the advancement in the technology, it is often argued that cinemas and theatres are the things of past in this modern era as everything is availaible on internet and can be accessed through digital devices, such as mobile phones and Led TV while sitting in home. On the other hand some people deny this opinion by arguing that these are integral part of our tradition and play an istrumental role in GDP of one's country.

Undoubtedly, technology has been evolved very rapidly since the last few decades, which has reduced the value of cinemas and offline drama shows because nowadays, every thing is available free of cost on internet. For example, there is a website named " Moviebox", which offers a variety of films to watch online and charges nothing and people do not need to go anywhere nor to spend a single penny. In this way they can save their valued money by not buying expensive tickets of cinema shows and commuting time as well.

On the other hand, some people oppose this point of view and still consider cinemas and theatres indispensable as our traditional values and economical growth are attached with it. Take an example of a newly released movie that fristly introduced in the cenimas can generate a good revenue for the production company as well as for the country. Moreover, our ancestors used to go to theatres to entertain themselves and it was considered as an important social activity as they had a chance to meet other citizens from unfamiliar customs.

Thus, these things remind us of our culture and also contribute to the economical growth of nations.

To conclude, it is true that cenimas and theatres are not up to date and include problems such as travel and buying tickets but I beleive the benifit they bring in terms of economic growth and to keep traditions alive are more than enough to not label them as outdated source of entertainment.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 6.0

The response addresses all parts of the prompt, discussing both views and providing a clear personal opinion. The ideas are relevant, such as the economic impact and the social/cultural value of theatres. However, the development of these ideas is somewhat superficial. For instance, the argument regarding economic growth is mentioned but not fully explained or supported with robust evidence. The response is balanced, but the analysis could be deepened to reach a higher band. The position is consistent throughout the essay, which is a positive feature.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 6.5

The essay is logically organized into clear paragraphs, each with a distinct focus. Cohesive devices are used, such as 'Undoubtedly', 'On the other hand', and 'Moreover', which help guide the reader through the argument. However, some transitions feel slightly mechanical, and the referencing is occasionally repetitive. The progression of ideas is generally clear, though the link between the introduction and the body paragraphs could be smoother. Overall, the structure is effective and supports the development of the argument.

Lexical Resource — Band 5.5

The range of vocabulary is adequate for the task, allowing the writer to express their ideas clearly. There are some attempts at less common vocabulary, such as 'indispensable' and 'instrumental', which is good. However, there are several spelling errors (e.g., 'availaible', 'istrumental', 'fristly', 'cenimas', 'beleive', 'benifit') and some awkward collocations. These errors do not impede communication, but they do limit the score. To improve, the student should focus on accuracy in spelling and more precise word choices.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 5.5

The essay uses a mix of simple and complex sentence structures. While the meaning is generally clear, there are frequent grammatical errors, particularly with articles ('the technology', 'the internet'), subject-verb agreement, and prepositions ('in the cenimas'). Punctuation is also inconsistent in places. While the writer attempts complex sentences, these often contain errors that detract from the overall fluency. The control of grammar is sufficient for communication, but the frequency of errors prevents a higher score.
