Student answer (Band 5.5)

Some individuals say that in the digital generation, theaters and cinemas are not important now because people can just watch movies and series they want online. Whereas, others believe that theaters and cinemas are still significant both economically and culturally. From my perspective, online entertainments are much easier, fun and free.

The new generation are more interested in online entertainments. Therefore, they choose to watch movies and series at home, which is somthing easier and free. People and especially the youngsters are lazy to go to the theaters and cinemas, while they can watch what they want at home. They can eat snacks freely, as cinemas and theaters prevent eating food outside. A compelling example, individuals now are more interested on Netflix series where they can watch it at their leaving rooms, with their friends and relatives and enjoy the series together. And I believe that it is the easiest way we can have fun with, and watch what we want freely.

Moreover, these entertaining places play a principal role for both culture and economy of a country. Cinemas and theaters can develop the culture of a nation, and numerous movies and series can be popular and spread around the world. Therefore, a lot of people from other countries will know about the culture of a specific nation, other directors and chanles can be interested in buying the series or even it can be nominated for and Oscar, which can aid both economy and culture of the country.

To conclude, people argue that cinemas and theaters are no longer the important areas where people can watch movies, because of the online generation. And others think that they are principle factors for the economy and the culture of a country. For me, the online entrtaiments are more interessant, funny and money free than the traditional places, which are theaters and cinemas.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 5.5

The response addresses both sides of the argument and provides a clear personal opinion. However, the development of ideas is somewhat uneven. The argument for online entertainment relies heavily on personal preference and generalisations, such as calling people 'lazy' for not going to cinemas, which lacks academic depth. The second body paragraph regarding the cultural and economic importance of cinemas is more relevant but remains somewhat superficial. To reach a higher band, you should provide more nuanced analysis, such as discussing the unique social experience of a cinema or the specific impact of local film industries on national identity, rather than focusing on the convenience of snacks or home viewing.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 6.0

The essay is organised into logical paragraphs, each with a clear central topic. Cohesive devices are used, such as 'Moreover', 'Therefore', and 'To conclude', which help guide the reader. However, some transitions feel mechanical or slightly repetitive. For instance, the use of 'Therefore' appears frequently in a way that does not always logically follow the preceding clause. Additionally, some referencing is slightly unclear, such as in the phrase 'it can be nominated for an Oscar', where the antecedent is not explicitly defined. Improving the variety of linking words and ensuring smoother transitions between sentences would enhance the flow.

Lexical Resource — Band 5.5

The vocabulary is generally adequate for the task, but it lacks the precision and sophistication required for higher bands. There are several instances of awkward word choices or non-standard phrasing, such as 'money free' instead of 'cost-effective' or 'free of charge', and 'leaving rooms' instead of 'living rooms'. The use of 'funny' is also imprecise in this context, as 'entertaining' or 'enjoyable' would be more appropriate. While you attempt to use topic-specific vocabulary like 'nominated' and 'economically', the overall range is limited, and some errors in collocation persist throughout the text.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 5.5

The essay uses a mix of simple and complex sentence structures, but there are frequent grammatical errors that occasionally distract the reader. Examples include 'The new generation are' (subject-verb agreement), 'somthing' (spelling), 'interested on' (preposition error), and 'chanles' (spelling). Punctuation is generally functional, but there are issues with sentence fragments and comma usage. While the meaning is rarely obscured, the frequency of these minor errors prevents the essay from reaching a higher band. Focusing on subject-verb agreement and correct preposition usage would significantly improve the accuracy of your writing.
