IELTS Writing Task 2 question
Some people say that in the digital age, theatres and cinemas are no longer important as people can watch all the entertainment they want online. Others argue that theatres and cinemas are still important both economically and culturally.
Discuss both these views and give your own opinion.
Give reasons for your answer and include any relevant examples from your own knowledge or experience.
Student answer (Band 5.0)
Both argument are right in their own context. As you look at the modern age i.e. digital age, everyone has their own cinema in his own pocket or and house. Anyone can watch any movie or whatever they wont at any time. They cannot have to pay for tickets and go to cinema, but just opn the phone and watch. On the other hand people of ancient and old mindset prefer cinema instead of watching a movie online. They are also right by their own perspective as they point to economical and cultural importance. They enjoy watching movies conbinely i.e with other people in cinemas and theaters.
According to my point of view, watching movies online would be the right choice. As being Gen Z, we donnot have time and we are busy anytime with academic works and phones. I would like to prefer watching movies online at home instead of going to cinemas and theaters.
As for example I live in a place which donnot have cinemas nearby, so when I have to watch a movie, why should I go to cinema spending money on transport and then the tickets. I would waste a lot of time by going so far to watch movie and entertain.
If we take another example as poor people usually have a TV at home or they also have mobile. So when they have to go to cinema as prefered by the cultural people, how will they have the money to pay. Instead of starjing for money, why why donnot they have to watch movies only online at their homes.
I am not destroying the argument of old people but according to my perspective if a person watch movies online, it would be easy for him and it would also be affordable.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 5.0
The response addresses both sides of the argument and provides a clear personal opinion. However, the development of ideas is somewhat limited and repetitive. While you mention economic and cultural importance, these points are not explored in depth. The arguments provided, such as the convenience of watching movies at home, are relevant but rely on personal anecdotes rather than broader societal analysis. To improve, ensure that you expand on the 'economic and cultural' aspects mentioned in the prompt, as these are key to a balanced discussion. The conclusion is clear, but the overall depth of the response remains at a basic level.
Coherence and Cohesion — Band 5.0
The essay is organised into paragraphs, which helps the reader follow the structure. However, the use of cohesive devices is quite mechanical and sometimes inaccurate. For example, phrases like 'As for example' and 'If we take another example as' are repetitive and unnatural. The transition between ideas is often abrupt, and the logical progression within paragraphs is hindered by simple sentence structures. To reach a higher band, focus on using a wider variety of linking words and phrases (e.g., 'consequently', 'furthermore', 'in contrast') to connect your ideas more fluidly and logically.
Lexical Resource — Band 5.0
The vocabulary is generally adequate for the task but lacks the range and precision required for higher bands. You rely on basic, repetitive language such as 'watch movies', 'go to cinema', and 'right choice'. There are also some awkward collocations and word choices, such as 'watching movies conbinely' (likely meaning 'collectively' or 'together') and 'starjing for money' (which is unclear). To improve, try to incorporate more sophisticated vocabulary related to the topic, such as 'cinematic experience', 'digital accessibility', 'cultural heritage', or 'financial constraints', and ensure your spelling is accurate.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 5.0
The essay contains a mix of simple and complex sentence structures, but there are frequent grammatical errors that occasionally impede clarity. Common issues include subject-verb agreement (e.g., 'Both argument are right', 'a person watch movies'), incorrect verb forms ('they cannot have to pay'), and punctuation errors. The use of 'donnot' is non-standard. While the meaning is generally understandable, the high frequency of errors prevents the text from reaching a higher band. Focus on mastering basic sentence construction, subject-verb agreement, and consistent verb tense usage before attempting more complex structures.
