Some people say that in the digital age, theatres and cinemas are no longer important as people can watch all the entertainment they want online. Others argue that theatres and cinemas are still important both economically and culturally.

Discuss both these views and give your own opinion.

Give reasons for your answer and include any relevant examples from your own knowledge or experience.

Student answer (Band 8.0)

It is often suggested that theatres and cinemas have become obsolete now that streaming platforms offer unlimited entertainment at home. However, others maintain that these venues remain economically and culturally significant. This essay will examine both perspectives before presenting my own view, which favours the latter.

Proponents of the first view point to the sheer convenience of digital platforms. Services such as Netflix and Disney+ allow viewers to watch films and plays whenever they choose, without travelling or paying for tickets. Furthermore, the pandemic demonstrated that audiences could sustain their appetite for stories entirely through screens at home, suggesting that physical venues are no longer essential to how people consume drama and film.

Nevertheless, theatres and cinemas continue to play a vital economic and cultural role. Economically, they generate substantial employment, from actors and technicians to ushers and marketing staff, while also supporting related businesses such as restaurants and parking facilities in city centres. Culturally, live theatre offers an unrepeatable experience: no two performances are identical, and the immediacy of watching actors in real time fosters a communal energy that a recorded stream cannot replicate. Cinemas, similarly, provide a shared social ritual — watching a blockbuster on opening night with a full audience remains a distinct experience from watching alone on a laptop.

In my opinion, while digital platforms have undeniably changed viewing habits, they have not rendered theatres and cinemas irrelevant. Rather, the two coexist, serving different purposes: streaming offers flexibility, whereas physical venues offer atmosphere, spectacle, and communal connection that many people still actively seek out. Cities that lose their cinemas and theatres often report a decline in nightlife and local identity, which suggests these institutions matter well beyond ticket sales.

In conclusion, although online entertainment has reduced dependence on physical venues, theatres and cinemas retain genuine economic and cultural value that streaming cannot fully substitute.
