Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 5.0
The response attempts to address both sides of the argument and provides a personal opinion. However, the development of ideas is limited and often unclear. For instance, the argument regarding the economic importance of cinemas is mentioned but not explained or supported with specific evidence. The essay lacks a clear structure, and the transition between discussing online entertainment and the cultural/economic value of cinemas is disjointed. The ideas are often repetitive and lack the depth required for a higher band score, as the focus shifts frequently without providing a cohesive argument.
Coherence and Cohesion — Band 5.0
The essay lacks logical paragraphing, which makes it difficult to follow the progression of ideas. There is a lack of cohesive devices; sentences are often linked in a mechanical or confusing way, such as the abrupt transition in the second paragraph. Referencing is frequently unclear, and the overall structure is disjointed. While there is an attempt to organize the response, the lack of clear topic sentences and effective transitions between points significantly hinders the flow of the argument.
Lexical Resource — Band 5.0
The vocabulary is basic and repetitive, often relying on simple words like 'good', 'things', and 'go'. There are frequent errors in word choice and collocation, such as 'realistic reality' and 'horrible and dangerous style', which do not accurately convey the intended meaning. The range of vocabulary is limited, and the student struggles to express more complex ideas or use academic terminology appropriate for an IELTS Task 2 essay. Spelling errors are also present, which occasionally impede the reader's understanding.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 4.5
The response contains a high frequency of grammatical errors, including subject-verb agreement issues ('my and my friend want'), incorrect verb tenses, and fragmented sentences. The range of structures is very limited, consisting mostly of simple sentences with frequent errors in punctuation and word order. Complex structures are rarely attempted, and when they are, they are often grammatically incorrect, which causes difficulty for the reader. The persistent errors in basic grammar significantly impact the clarity of the writing.
