Student answer (Band 6.0)

Some people are proponent of this belief that traditional cinemas and theatres are no longer subsequent contributor of entertainment to people as media can be consumed conveniently online these days. While others argue that cinemas and theatre hold both cultural and economical significance. In my opinion, cinemas and theatres are crucial component of one’s culture but its contribution in socioecnomic status have been insignificant as owing to advancement in technology only few people prefer visitng cinemas these days.

Cinemas and theatres held a significant place in society and represented the culture of the society from the beginning of civilization. Public gravitated towards visiting such places for its recreational activities. Many cultural events and shows were displayed in theatre that depicted communitie’s indigenous values. Even today theatres are considered main hub to project any cultural display. People from locallities gather in one place to enjoy the display of drama or a skit in which actors are performing right infront of them. Public rejoice this and consider this experience as a part of their culture.

Contrary to contribution of cinema in culture its role in socioecnomic status of any country have declined. People these days prefer watching movies online. With advancement of technology and introduction of media platforms such as Netflix and Amazon Prime people prefer staying at home and watching movie in the comfort of their house in a fraction of the amount that they have to pay in cinema. However, true cinema experience is unmatched but the price factor is the biggest culprit due to which cinemas fail to capture public’s attention these days. Owing to these reasons movies are not generating as much income from theatres as much it can be generated on platforms such as Netflix, despite the cost is only a portion of money compared to cinema’s ticket but the comfort and low cost has surged the number of online viewers. Consequently, movies are not generating much money in cinema and certainly not contributing in the socioecnomic status of the country.

To conclude, I must say cultural significance of cinema is irreplaceable . However, their role in socioeconomic status have declined significantly as people tends to lean towards online platforms rather than physical cinemas.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 6.0

The response addresses all parts of the prompt, discussing both views and providing a clear personal opinion. The ideas are relevant and generally well-developed, particularly regarding the cultural importance of theatres and the economic impact of streaming services. However, the argument regarding the 'socioeconomic status' is slightly repetitive, and the term is used somewhat loosely to refer to the profitability of cinemas. The position is consistent throughout, though the development could be more nuanced by exploring how cinemas might adapt to remain economically viable rather than just focusing on their decline.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 6.5

The essay is logically organized with a clear introduction, body paragraphs, and a conclusion. Paragraphing is used appropriately to separate the cultural and economic arguments. Cohesive devices such as 'Contrary to', 'However', and 'Consequently' are used to link ideas, although some transitions feel slightly mechanical. Referencing is generally clear, though there are minor issues with pronoun agreement (e.g., 'its contribution' referring to 'cinemas and theatres'). Overall, the progression of ideas is easy to follow.

Lexical Resource — Band 6.0

The range of vocabulary is adequate for the task, with some attempts at more sophisticated language like 'indigenous values', 'recreational activities', and 'irreplaceable'. However, there are several instances of awkward word choice or collocation errors, such as 'subsequent contributor' instead of 'significant contributor' and 'socioecnomic status' used where 'economic viability' or 'profitability' would be more precise. Spelling errors like 'socioecnomic', 'locallities', and 'infront' also occur, which slightly detracts from the overall quality.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 6.0

The essay uses a mix of simple and complex sentence structures. While the meaning is generally clear, there are frequent grammatical errors, particularly with subject-verb agreement (e.g., 'cinemas and theatres held', 'role... have declined', 'people tends to lean') and article usage. Punctuation is generally functional, but there are some missing commas in complex sentences. These errors are noticeable but do not impede communication, placing the response firmly in the 6.0 range.
