Student answer (Band 8.0)
In the digital age, online streaming platforms have transformed the way people consume entertainment. Some people therefore believe that theatres and cinemas have become unnecessary, while others argue that they continue to play an important economic and cultural role. In my opinion, although online entertainment is more convenient, theatres and cinemas are still valuable and should remain an important part of society.
On the one hand, it is understandable why some people consider cinemas and theatres less important today. Streaming services such as Netflix and YouTube allow people to watch films, shows and other forms of entertainment from the comfort of their homes. This is often cheaper than purchasing cinema tickets, and viewers can choose what to watch at any time. Furthermore, modern televisions, sound systems and smartphones provide increasingly high-quality viewing experiences. As a result, many people, particularly those with busy schedules, may prefer online entertainment because it is flexible and convenient.
On the other hand, theatres and cinemas continue to have significant economic and cultural importance. Economically, they provide employment for actors, directors, technicians, cinema staff and many other workers in the entertainment industry. They also attract customers to nearby restaurants, shopping centres and other businesses. Culturally, theatres are especially important because they preserve traditional forms of performance, including drama, music and dance. Cinemas also provide a shared social experience that cannot be fully reproduced at home. For example, watching a highly anticipated film with a large audience can create a sense of excitement and community.
In my view, online entertainment will continue to grow, but it should complement rather than replace theatres and cinemas. Digital platforms provide convenience, while physical venues offer social interaction, cultural experiences and economic benefits.
In conclusion, although people can now access almost unlimited entertainment online, theatres and cinemas remain relevant. Their cultural, social and economic contributions mean that they are still an important part of modern society.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 8.0
The response fully addresses all parts of the prompt. You have clearly discussed both perspectives—the convenience of online streaming and the economic/cultural value of physical venues—and provided a clear personal opinion in the introduction and conclusion. The ideas are well-developed, particularly the distinction between the economic impact of employment and the cultural significance of shared social experiences. The position is consistent throughout the essay, and the arguments are supported with relevant examples, such as the mention of Netflix and the social aspect of watching films in a cinema. This meets the requirements for a high band score.
Coherence and Cohesion — Band 8.0
The essay is logically organized with a clear progression of ideas. Each paragraph has a central topic, and the transition between the two viewpoints is smooth, using appropriate cohesive devices like 'On the one hand' and 'On the other hand'. The use of linking words such as 'Furthermore', 'As a result', and 'In conclusion' helps guide the reader through your argument effectively. Paragraphing is used appropriately to separate the different stages of your response, and referencing is clear throughout. The flow of information is natural and easy to follow.
Lexical Resource — Band 7.5
You demonstrate a good range of vocabulary appropriate for an academic discussion. Phrases like 'consume entertainment', 'highly anticipated', and 'complement rather than replace' show a good command of language. You use topic-specific vocabulary effectively, such as 'streaming platforms', 'economic and cultural importance', and 'traditional forms of performance'. While the vocabulary is accurate and natural, it could be slightly more sophisticated to reach the highest band, but it is certainly sufficient for a high-level response. There are no noticeable errors in word choice or collocation.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 8.0
The essay displays a wide range of grammatical structures, including complex sentences and varied clause types. Your control over grammar is excellent, with the majority of sentences being error-free. Punctuation is used correctly to support the clarity of your arguments. You successfully combine simple and complex structures, such as in the sentence 'Although online entertainment is more convenient, theatres and cinemas are still valuable and should remain an important part of society.' There are no significant grammatical errors that impede communication, and the overall accuracy is very high.
