Student answer (Band 5.5)
The given essay argues the importance of theatres and cinemas within different age groups. Some people believe that theaters and cinemas are less important because of social media and online entertainment while, others show different opinion. In this essay, I will discuss both views, before giving my personal statement. Many citizens believe that showbiz industry is no longer important because of increased inflation rates and more work pressure. For example, higher fuel prices restrict many families to visit cinema. On the other hand, majority of people spend their weekend at work place due to the pending tasks of whole week. Therefore, people prefer to watch all entertainment content online on YouTube or Netflix. While, other people think that theatres and cinemas are valuable. A number of people belong to film industry who run their kitchen and whole life expenses by doing jobs in theater. Moreover, cinemas are more important, as they represent the culture of a nation globally. For example, Hollywood and Bollywood industries are highly valuable and recognized worldwide. These entertainment industries release blockbuster drama, action and horror movies all over the globe. These films are the essential source of fun for many generations. However, in my opinion theatres and cinemas are extremely important because they represent the culture and provide nation's economy. For example, many theater artists perform their stage drama in a certain area which represents the art of that area. Moreover, many artists could bring international projects from top-tier industries which creates profit. In conclusion, although cinemas are no longer needed for some people but they represent the area's culture.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 5.5
The essay addresses all parts of the prompt, discussing both views and providing a clear personal opinion. However, the development of ideas is somewhat limited. For instance, the argument regarding economic factors is slightly disjointed, as the link between inflation and the decline of cinemas is asserted rather than fully explained. The points regarding cultural representation are relevant but could be supported with more specific, nuanced examples beyond just mentioning Hollywood or Bollywood. The position is clear, but the supporting arguments lack the depth required for a higher band score. The essay stays on topic throughout, but the analysis remains at a somewhat superficial level.
Coherence and Cohesion — Band 6.0
The essay is organized into logical paragraphs, and there is a clear progression of ideas. Cohesive devices are used, such as 'On the other hand', 'Moreover', and 'In conclusion', though some transitions feel a bit mechanical. The referencing is generally clear, although the connection between sentences within paragraphs could be smoother. For example, the transition from discussing inflation to the preference for Netflix is abrupt. Paragraphing is used appropriately to separate the different viewpoints and the conclusion. Overall, the structure is coherent, but the flow between ideas could be improved with more sophisticated linking words and better sentence-to-sentence cohesion.
Lexical Resource — Band 5.5
The vocabulary is adequate for the task, allowing the writer to express their ideas clearly. There are some attempts at less common vocabulary, such as 'showbiz industry', 'top-tier', and 'blockbuster', which are used appropriately. However, there are some inaccuracies in word choice and collocation, such as 'run their kitchen and whole life expenses' (a non-standard idiom) and 'provide nation's economy' (which should be 'contribute to the nation's economy'). The range is sufficient to convey meaning, but it lacks the precision and flexibility required for a higher band. The repetition of basic terms like 'important' and 'people' also limits the lexical variety.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 5.5
The essay uses a mix of simple and complex sentence structures. While the meaning is generally clear, there are frequent grammatical errors, particularly with articles ('the' is often missing or misused, e.g., 'in film industry') and pluralization ('theaters and cinemas are valuable'). Some sentences are slightly awkward, such as 'Many citizens believe that showbiz industry is no longer important because of increased inflation rates and more work pressure.' Punctuation is generally functional, but there are minor errors, such as the comma usage after 'while' in the introduction. These errors do not impede communication, but they are frequent enough to prevent a higher score.
