Student answer (Band 6.0)

In this modern era, many people use their phone and laptop to watch movies, while some individuals prefer theaters. However, many people believe that now in this digital era, we do not need cinemas and theaters, because we can see movies and dramas online. Others believe that theaters and cinemas are still important both economically and culturally. In my opinion, online entertainment has more benefits.

There are several reasons why theaters and cinemas are still important. To begin with, it helps to generate employment for many people. Most of the cinemas and theaters have more than 30 employees, hence it is a source of income for many people. Moreover, watching movies on big screen with HD quality gives different experience and helps us to understand the depth of that movie. For example, you can watch movie without any distraction in cinemas, which helps you understand it more easily.

On the other hand, there are various benefits of watching movies online. To start with, it is often cheaper than cinemas and theaters, thus people can save their money. For example, subscription of any OTT platform helps you to watch movies as many time as you want. What is more, you can watch it anywhere and anytime by using your mobile, also you do not have to travel to theaters to watch movies. For example, people can watch it during their breaks at work or while they are travelling.

In conclusion, theaters and cinemas are the original methods of watching movies and it helps us to understand it more. On the other side, online apps and sites can help us to save money and watch it according to our comfort.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 6.0

The response addresses both sides of the argument and provides a clear personal opinion in the introduction. However, the development of ideas is somewhat limited. While you mention economic benefits and the 'experience' of cinema, these points are not fully extended with deep analysis. The conclusion is brief and merely restates the points rather than synthesising them. To reach a higher band, ensure that each body paragraph provides a more nuanced exploration of the topic, perhaps by discussing the cultural impact of cinemas more explicitly, as requested by the prompt.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 6.5

The essay is logically organised into clear paragraphs, and there is a progression of ideas from the introduction to the conclusion. You use basic cohesive devices such as 'To begin with', 'Moreover', and 'On the other hand' effectively to guide the reader. However, the transitions between sentences are sometimes a bit mechanical. To improve, try to vary your linking words and ensure that referencing (e.g., using pronouns or synonyms to refer back to previous ideas) is more fluid to avoid repetitive sentence structures.

Lexical Resource — Band 6.0

The vocabulary is generally adequate for the task, allowing you to express your ideas clearly. You use some topic-specific terms like 'OTT platform', 'subscription', and 'employment'. However, the range is somewhat limited, and there is a reliance on simple, repetitive phrasing (e.g., 'watch movies' is used repeatedly). To achieve a higher score, incorporate more precise academic vocabulary and collocations, such as 'cinematic experience', 'cost-effective', or 'cultural significance', rather than relying on basic descriptors.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 6.0

You demonstrate a mix of simple and complex sentence structures. While the meaning is consistently clear, there are recurring grammatical errors, such as missing articles ('on big screen' should be 'on a big screen') and issues with pluralisation ('watch movie' should be 'watch a movie'). Additionally, there are minor punctuation and preposition errors throughout. To improve, focus on subject-verb agreement and the correct use of articles, and try to incorporate a wider variety of complex grammatical structures, such as conditional sentences or passive voice, with greater accuracy.
