Student answer (Band 6.0)
In recent years, there has been growing debate about whether cinemas and theatres are important or not for entertainment. Some individuals argue that in the digital era, theatres and cinemas are not essential for entertainment because people can watch all they want online. Others argue that these entertainments are important both economic and cultural reasons. Although individuals can watch all the entertainment online, I believe that cinemas and theaters are still important for economy and cultural reasons.
On the one hand, some citizens argue that in digital age, theaters and cinemas are not important because individuals can watch all the entertainment online. Online entertainment provides convenience and access to a wide range of movies. After a hectic day at work, people can conveniently watch a wide range of movies online without having to pay for cinema tickets. Online platforms also provide a wide range of films and programs.
On the other hand, some individuals believe that theaters and cinemas are still important because it provides economic and cultural advantages. Theaters and cinemas are not simply a form of entertainment. This is because they promote cultural values and traditions. Another main point is that theaters also provide economic benefits because they create employment and generate income. For instance, a successful cinema can provide employment for ticket sellers, and food-service workers while also generating income for nearby restaurants and shops.
In conclusion, some individuals argue that cinemas and theaters are no longer important due to online entertainment, while others argue that these sources are essential for both economic and cultural reasons. Online entertainment provides convenience and variety, whereas cinemas provide employment and generate income.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 6.0
The response addresses all parts of the prompt, discussing both views and providing a clear personal opinion in the introduction. However, the development of ideas is somewhat limited. While the economic benefits are supported with a specific example of employment, the cultural argument is mentioned but not fully extended. The conclusion is also quite repetitive, merely restating the points made in the body paragraphs rather than synthesising them. To reach a higher band, you should aim to provide more depth in your arguments, perhaps by explaining how digital platforms fail to replicate the unique 'communal experience' of a cinema or theatre.
Coherence and Cohesion — Band 6.5
The essay is logically organised with a clear introduction, two body paragraphs, and a conclusion. Paragraphing is used appropriately to separate the two opposing views. Cohesive devices such as 'On the one hand', 'On the other hand', and 'For instance' are used effectively to guide the reader. However, the flow between sentences is occasionally a bit mechanical. The transition between the general statement about cultural values and the specific economic example could be smoother to improve the overall progression of ideas.
Lexical Resource — Band 6.0
The vocabulary is adequate for the task, allowing the writer to convey ideas clearly. You use some topic-specific terms like 'digital era', 'economic benefits', and 'food-service workers'. However, the range is somewhat limited and repetitive, particularly with the frequent use of 'important' and 'provide'. To achieve a higher score, you should incorporate more varied synonyms and collocations to demonstrate a wider lexical range, such as using 'essential', 'paramount', or 'generate revenue' instead of repeating basic terms.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 6.0
The essay demonstrates a mix of simple and complex sentence structures. Most sentences are clear and easy to follow, and errors in grammar and punctuation are infrequent and do not impede communication. There are minor slips, such as 'important economic and cultural reasons' (should be 'important for economic and cultural reasons') and 'in digital age' (missing an article). While you show control over basic structures, incorporating a greater variety of complex grammatical forms, such as conditional sentences or passive voice constructions, would enhance your score.
