Student answer (Band 5.5)

It is argued by people that individuals can be entertained online. Therefore, cinemas and theatres are no longer important at present. While, others argue that theatres and cinemas are still significant both economically and culturally. I believe that in this modern era, people have their gadgets, which is best alternative to theaters and cinemas.

One school of thought think that now as days, theatres and cinemas are unimportant because people can watch all the entertainment online via high technology and portable gadgets such as mobile phones and laptops, which can be used anytime in their leisure time. For instance, a significant number of people prefer to see movies at their smart phones through internet rather than to travel towards cinemas and theatres, which are very far from the city. Additionally, waste of time is another factor for the people to stay at their homes and watch an entertainment dramas or movies online instead of watching in theatres.

Theatres and cinemas are still important for some individuals due to following factors. One of the crucial factors is that people prefer to go to cinemas and theatres due to the huge and wide screen of cinemas. Moreover, they can enjoy watching shows, dramas and movies at 3D screens, which facility is still unavailable in smart phones and laptops. Furthermore, a group of friends or family can gather at cinemas and theatres enjoy watching shows together, which is their culture. For example, in countries like Pakistan, little number of people still loves to watch movies, dramas and shows by getting together.

In Conclusion, theatres and cinemas are no longer important for people because they can watch all the entertainment they want online in this digital world. Others argue that theatres and cinemas are still important both economically and culturally. From my perspective, people can watch all the entertainment online utilizing their smart and portable gadgets.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 5.5

The response addresses both views and provides an opinion. However, the development of ideas is somewhat limited. While you mention the convenience of online entertainment and the social aspect of cinemas, the arguments could be extended with more depth or specific examples. Your position is stated in the introduction and conclusion, but it remains somewhat repetitive rather than evolving through the essay. To reach a higher band, ensure that your opinion is not just stated, but integrated into the body paragraphs as a synthesis of the arguments presented. The conclusion also repeats the prompt's phrasing rather than summarizing the main points effectively.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 5.5

The essay is organized into clear paragraphs, which helps the reader follow the structure. You use some cohesive devices such as 'One school of thought', 'Additionally', and 'In Conclusion'. However, the use of these devices is sometimes mechanical or slightly unnatural. For instance, the transition between the introduction and the first body paragraph is abrupt. Furthermore, some sentences within paragraphs lack smooth logical flow, such as the jump from 'waste of time' to 'stay at their homes'. Improving the variety of linking words and ensuring that each sentence logically follows the previous one will enhance the coherence of your writing.

Lexical Resource — Band 5.5

You demonstrate an adequate range of vocabulary for the task, using terms like 'digital age', 'portable gadgets', and 'economically and culturally'. However, there are instances of awkward word choices and minor errors, such as 'now as days' (should be 'nowadays') and 'an entertainment dramas' (should be 'entertainment dramas'). The vocabulary is generally functional but lacks the sophistication or precision required for higher bands. To improve, focus on using more precise collocations and avoiding repetitive phrasing, such as using 'entertainment' multiple times in close proximity.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 5.5

You use a mix of simple and complex sentence structures, but there are frequent grammatical errors that occasionally affect the flow. Examples include 'It is argued by people that individuals can be entertained online' (passive voice is a bit clunky here), 'One school of thought think' (subject-verb agreement error), and 'little number of people' (should be 'a small number of people'). While these errors do not prevent the reader from understanding your meaning, they are frequent enough to keep the score in the 6.0 range. Focus on subject-verb agreement and article usage to improve accuracy.
