Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 5.5

The response addresses the prompt by discussing both views on whether theatres and cinemas are still important in the digital age, and attempts to give a personal opinion in the conclusion. However, the development of ideas is somewhat limited and repetitive. For instance, the discussion on technology focuses heavily on saving time and money without deeply exploring broader cultural implications, while the second body paragraph mistakenly discusses the negative effects of the internet rather than directly addressing the economic importance mentioned in the prompt. Furthermore, the personal position stated in the conclusion ('it has both positive or negative development') is slightly vague. Overall, the response meets the basic requirements of addressing all parts of the task, earning a band 5.5.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 5.0

The essay is organised into paragraphs, including an introduction, two body paragraphs, and a conclusion. However, the logical progression is hindered by repetitive phrasing, mechanical cohesive devices (such as 'To commence with', 'Moving further', and 'In conclusion'), and frequent punctuation errors before commas and periods. Referencing is also weak at times, such as when transition phrases do not cleanly link the sentences together. Paragraphing is attempted, but the internal structure of the paragraphs lacks smooth transitions between ideas, particularly in the second body paragraph where the shift from economic impact to social interaction feels disjointed. These issues place the response firmly in the band 5.0 range.

Lexical Resource — Band 5.0

The student uses a limited and repetitive range of vocabulary throughout the response, relying heavily on basic words like 'technology', 'internet', 'watch', and 'people'. There are several noticeable word choice errors and misspellings, such as 'crutial' instead of crucial, 'intraction' instead of interaction, 'amoung' instead of among, 'consendration' instead of consideration, and 'empahasize' instead of emphasize. While the vocabulary is minimally adequate to convey the general topic of online entertainment versus physical cinemas, the frequent lexical errors and lack of sophisticated phrasing prevent the essay from achieving a higher band score.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 5.0

The student attempts a mix of simple and complex sentence structures, but grammatical control is weak. There are frequent errors in subject-verb agreement (e.g., 'every person have', 'there are some negative effect are associated'), awkward phrasing ('for which vindication would be elaborated'), and incorrect punctuation spacing throughout the text. Complex structures often contain errors that cause difficulty for the reader, such as incomplete clauses and run-on sentences. Although the general meaning can usually be understood, the high frequency of basic grammatical mistakes means the performance aligns with band 5.0 descriptors.
