Student answer (Band 7.0)
Entertainment is crucial in people's lives due to today's fast-paced life. In recent years, the issue of whether cinemas and theatres are unnecessary or they contribute to economy and culture, has remained a matter of debate in the society. This essay will discuss both views as well as state my own opinion.
To commence with, there are numerous reasons why people find cinemas unnecessary. The first and foremost is, easy access to online entertainment sources. Modern technology has provided mankind with a number of digital gadgets. As a result, they can explore any kind of content which may not be available in cinemas and theatres. Moreover, online platforms not only provide comfort and privacy but also are cost-effective. As individuals can watch anything while being at home as well as they save a lot of money.
On the other hand, the opponents of this view argue that cinemas and theatres hold economic and cultural value. The dramas and shows presented in theatres are based on traditions and cultures of different people which help them to admire their heritage. In addition, cinemas help to maintain a strong bond between friends or family members as they spend quality time together. Also, cinemas generate money for authorities which are in turn used for public expenditure.
Although digital platforms have made entertainment purpose easy and cheap, I personally believe that cinemas and theatres still hold a special value in society and people must recognize them.
To conclude, it can be said that even though, modern technology has several benefits as it is convenient and cost-effective, cinemas and theatres on the other hand boost the economy, carry traditional values and strengthen bond.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 7.0
The response addresses all parts of the task by discussing both views—the decline of theatres due to online entertainment and their ongoing economic and cultural value—while also clearly stating the writer's own opinion in the body and conclusion. The position is maintained throughout the essay. The ideas are generally relevant, well-supported, and extended, as seen in the discussion of economic benefits, cultural heritage, and social bonding. While some points, such as the advantages of online platforms, could have been elaborated slightly further, the response fully satisfies the requirements of Band 7 by addressing all parts of the prompt with a clear and developed position.
Coherence and Cohesion — Band 7.0
The essay presents a clear logical organisation and progression throughout. Each paragraph has a clear central topic, starting with an introduction, followed by balanced body paragraphs examining both sides, and concluding with a summary. Cohesive devices such as 'To commence with', 'Moreover', 'On the other hand', and 'To conclude' are used to guide the reader, although some transitions feel slightly mechanical or formulaic. Paragraphing is used appropriately to separate distinct arguments. Referencing is generally clear, contributing to an overall coherent piece of writing that meets the criteria for Band 6.5 or 7.0, comfortably securing a solid Band 7.
Lexical Resource — Band 6.5
The writer demonstrates a sufficient range of vocabulary to allow for flexibility and precision, employing less common lexical items such as 'fast-paced life', 'cost-effective', 'heritage', and 'public expenditure'. There are occasional slight awkwardnesses or minor inaccuracies in collocation and word choice, such as 'entertainment purpose' instead of 'entertainment purposes' or 'making entertainment easy'. However, these errors do not impede communication. Spelling and word formation are generally accurate throughout the essay, aligning well with the characteristics of Band 6.5 to 7.0.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 6.5
The response exhibits a mix of simple and complex sentence forms. The writer attempts various complex structures with reasonable success, such as conditional and concessive clauses (e.g., 'Although digital platforms have made entertainment purpose easy and cheap, I personally believe...'). There are some minor grammatical errors and punctuation slips, such as unnecessary commas ('...online platforms not only provide comfort and privacy but also are cost-effective') and preposition choices. Nevertheless, these errors are relatively infrequent and do not impede communication, ensuring the response fits comfortably within the Band 6.5 to 7.0 range.
