Some people say that in the digital age, theatres and cinemas are no longer important as people can watch all the entertainment they want online. Others argue that theatres and cinemas are still important both economically and culturally.
Discuss both these views and give your own opinion.
Give reasons for your answer and include any relevant examples from your own knowledge or experience.
Student answer (Band 5.5)
Theaters and Cinemas have served as a long term place for entertainment in the society. They have a significant importance in the history and cultures of different countries. People have gathered for ages to view different skits and genres of plays from centuries. Although now a more modern approach has begun where movies are played in a big screen rather than actors performing live.
Now a days different devices have somewhat taken place of the cinemas as every movie or tv show can be accessible with few touches of a screen. One may argue that is much more convenient as you can watch it at your own time and schedule and pause and play according to your liking, and carry on watching whenever you have the time to.
On the contrary, in cinemas firstly you have to stand in queues for tickets sit at an alloted seats and there are no breaks in between but ine at the time of interval.
One of the most sought argument that often arises is the cost to which a visit to the cinema comes. Why pay for a movie in the cinema when you can watch the same movie for a much more affordable cost at the comfort of your home, also the prices of the food and beverages at cinema are said to be "Ridiculous".
In my opinion yes cinema are very important for a society not only economically but also traditionally as they give a strong sense of the culture of a nation. There within lies the essence of a community.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 6.0
The response addresses all parts of the prompt by discussing both views—that online entertainment has replaced cinemas, and that theatres and cinemas remain economically and culturally important—while also providing a personal opinion. However, the development of ideas is somewhat limited and lacks depth. For instance, the discussion on the economic disadvantages of cinemas relies on simple points like 'stand in queues' and 'prices of the food and beverages'. Furthermore, the conclusion comes rather abruptly without a full synthesis of the preceding points. The position is clear, but the ideas require greater extension and support to meet the higher band criteria. Therefore, a band 6.0 is appropriate as all parts of the task are addressed, but some areas remain under-developed.
Coherence and Cohesion — Band 5.5
The essay displays a coherent overall arrangement with a recognisable progression of ideas, moving from historical context to modern online streaming, then to the drawbacks of cinemas, and finally to the writer's opinion. Paragraphing is attempted, but some paragraphs are extremely brief or split awkwardly, such as the single-sentence paragraphs regarding cinema experiences. Cohesive devices are occasionally faulty or missing, and referencing is at times unclear, such as 'There within lies the essence of a community'. While logical relationships are generally maintained, the mechanical use of transition phrases ('On the contrary', 'One of the most sought argument') prevents the text from achieving a higher score.
Lexical Resource — Band 5.5
The student uses an adequate range of vocabulary for the task, with attempts at less common items such as 'significant importance', 'convenient', and 'economically'. However, there are noticeable lexical inaccuracies and awkward word choices, such as 'long term place for entertainment in the society', 'taken place of the cinemas', and 'most sought argument'. Spelling is generally acceptable, but collocation and phrasing errors recur throughout the text, such as 'sit at an alloted seats' and 'ine at the time of interval'. These errors do not seriously impede communication, but they restrict the lexical score to a solid 5.5.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 5.5
The response exhibits a mix of simple and complex sentence forms, though complex structures are often prone to errors. Examples include missing articles ('in cinemas firstly you have to stand in queues'), punctuation issues (run-on sentences and missing commas), and preposition errors ('at the comfort of your home'). There are also agreement errors, such as 'cinema are very important'. While the meaning is generally clear and communication is rarely impeded, the frequency of grammatical inaccuracies across both simple and complex sentences places this performance firmly at band 5.5.
