IELTS Writing Task 2 question
Some people say that in the digital age, theatres and cinemas are no longer important as people can watch all the entertainment they want online. Others argue that theatres and cinemas are still important both economically and culturally.
Discuss both these views and give your own opinion.
Give reasons for your answer and include any relevant examples from your own knowledge or experience.
Student answer (Band 6.0)
In recent years, it is often argued that watching entertainment online is more preferable by people rather than through theatres and cinemas. This essay will examine both perspectives before presenting my own view on the issue.
On the one hand, theatres and cinemas are the most favorite of people who love spending time outdoors. It is one way to cope with their families and friends. Despite this, these are traditional ways in watching movies. In our generation, individuals find it inconvenient to go out and visit the respective malls to view films. For instance, people need to pay for transportation and tickets. They need to exert effort to go to the place. Moreover, shows in cinemas are limited and have time schedules wherein viewers must ensure to arrive on time.
On the other hand, in the digital age, watching entertainment online is more convenient than going to cinemas. For example, viewing a film in Netflix is easier. People will enjoy it even by just staying at home. Moreover, there are various movies, series and documentaries to choose from. They do not need to travel to malls and buy tickets. People have the freedom to choose what time they preferred to watch. The competitions among firms to let consumers use their applications online as means of entertainment is tight, so they develop and acquire new inventions that will result to more viewers.
In conclusion, although theatres and cinemas are still entertaining for some people and both economical and cultural, I strongly believe that watching online is more advantageous in the modern world.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 6.0
The student addresses all parts of the prompt by discussing both the decline of theatres and cinemas in the digital age and their ongoing economic and cultural importance. A clear position is presented in the introduction and reinforced in the conclusion. However, the ideas lack full development and depth. For instance, the discussion on why online streaming is convenient repeats points about avoiding travel and buying tickets without adding varied supporting evidence. The claim that theatres are economical and cultural is mentioned briefly in the conclusion without being properly established in the body paragraphs. While the prompt is adequately covered to meet the core requirements, the supporting details tend to be somewhat repetitive, placing this response firmly in the Band 6.0 category.
Coherence and Cohesion — Band 6.0
The essay displays a coherent overall arrangement with a logical paragraph structure. Each paragraph has a distinct focus, separating the online streaming perspective from the traditional cinema viewpoint. Cohesive devices such as 'On the one hand', 'On the other hand', 'For instance', and 'In conclusion' are used to guide the reader through the text. However, referencing and cohesion are occasionally mechanical or slightly awkward, such as 'these are traditional ways in watching movies', and paragraph transitions could be smoother. Paragraphing is used appropriately to separate the introduction, two body paragraphs, and the conclusion. Overall, the organizational structure is clear and meets the criteria for Band 6.0.
Lexical Resource — Band 6.0
The student demonstrates an adequate range of vocabulary for the task, successfully communicating ideas related to entertainment, digital technology, and convenience. Words and phrases like 'digital age', 'convenient', 'transportation', and 'documentaries' are used effectively. There are, however, noticeable lexical inaccuracies and awkward word choices, such as 'watching entertainment online is more preferable by people', 'cope with their families', and 'time schedules wherein viewers must ensure to arrive on time'. Furthermore, the student attempts some less common vocabulary but occasionally miscollocates them. These errors do not impede overall communication, placing the lexical control solidly at Band 6.0.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 6.0
The writer employs a mix of simple and complex sentence forms, including conditional-like structures ('if people can watch...') and relative clauses ('shows in cinemas are limited and have time schedules wherein viewers must ensure...'). There are several grammatical errors and awkward phrasings throughout the text, such as 'is more preferable by', 'traditional ways in watching movies', and 'what time they preferred to watch' (tense inconsistency). Despite these errors in grammar and punctuation, they rarely impede communication, as the intended meaning remains clear to the reader. This balance of mixed structures and persistent minor errors corresponds well to the Band 6.0 descriptors.
