Student answer (Band 6.0)

Some individuals believe that in this age of digitisation, people are no longer interested in theatres and cinemas as the content they want to watch is available online. Others says that both cinemas and theatres are still economically and culturally in demand. This essay will argue that although online entertainment has reduced the need to visit cinemas and theatres for some people, these venues remain important because they provide economic benefits and a unique social and cultural experience.

Unlike cinemas, the online OTT platforms provide a variety of entertainment that we can watch anytime while sitting at home. It is more convenient for many people because they don't have to travel to cinemas and it eliminates the stress of reaching on time before the show starts. As a result, they can save a lot of time and effort to watch their favourite movies and shows. Also, it helps them to save a lot of money. For example, people can manage their budget for entertainment better if they watch at home, this way they can save their money from spending on commute, tickets and food.

On the other hand, cinemas play a vital role in the society both economically and culturally. It provide the experience of watching movies together with other people which help in socialising and also provides a chance to meet your friends and relative. Moreover, it may also generate employment opportunities for people working in cinema for example, cleaners, receptionists, screen operators, food sellers and many more.

In conclusion, although watching at home can be more comfortable and budget friendly, cinemas can be more fun with friends and family watching on big screen also it contributes in the economy.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 6.0

The student addresses all parts of the task by discussing both views—the rise of online entertainment and the enduring economic and cultural importance of theatres and cinemas—and presents a clear position throughout the essay. The introduction outlines the main arguments, and the body paragraphs develop relevant ideas. For instance, the second paragraph explains the convenience and financial savings of online platforms, while the third paragraph highlights the social benefits and employment opportunities generated by cinemas. However, some ideas tend to generalise slightly and could be extended further with more specific examples. Overall, the task is well covered, satisfying the requirements for a Band 6.5 or 7.0, and is best placed at Band 6.5 due to under-developed support in places.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 6.0

The essay displays a clear overall progression with logical organisation. Each paragraph has a distinct focus, moving from the introduction to online viewing, then to the benefits of physical cinemas, and finally concluding. Cohesive devices such as 'Unlike cinemas', 'As a result', 'On the other hand', and 'In conclusion' are used to guide the reader through the text, although some referencing is slightly mechanical. Paragraphing is used appropriately to separate ideas. While logical flow is maintained, minor lapses in cohesion keep the text from reaching higher bands. Therefore, a band score of 6.5 is appropriate, reflecting clear logical organisation with occasional mechanical transitions.

Lexical Resource — Band 6.0

The student demonstrates an adequate range of vocabulary for the task, attempting less common items such as 'digitisation', 'economically and culturally in demand', and 'employment opportunities'. However, there are some noticeable inaccuracies in word choice and collocation, such as saying 'Others says' (grammatical error spilling into vocabulary), 'watching at home' instead of 'watching movies at home', and repetitive phrasing like 'save a lot of money' and 'save their money'. Spelling is generally accurate, but the lexical range lacks the flexibility and precision required for higher bands. The vocabulary used is sufficient to convey meaning clearly, supporting a Band 6.0 rating.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 6.0

The writer uses a mix of simple and complex sentence forms, incorporating subordinating clauses like 'although online entertainment has reduced the need...' and 'because they don't have to travel...'. However, there are several grammatical errors and punctuation slips throughout the response. Examples include subject-verb agreement issues ('Others says', 'It provide'), missing plural markers ('cleaner' implied by list structure though written as 'cleaners', but notice 'friend and relative' instead of 'friends and relatives'), and comma splices in the conclusion ('watching on big screen also it contributes'). These errors do not impede communication, but their frequency prevents the essay from achieving a Band 7.0. A score of 6.0 reflects this mix of structures and persistent minor errors.
