Student answer (Band 6.0)

As the world is moving to technological advancements, it has raised concerns among people that theatres and cinemas are of no importance anymore as every sort of entertainment is available online. However, some people still consider theatres and cinemas an essential component of economy and culture. In my perspective, technological innovation has reduced the need of cinemas and theatres to a great extent.

In this modern-era, people prefer to watch any sort of entertainment, especially movies, on online-platforms, instead of going to theatres or cinemas. In this fast-paced world, most of the people consider visiting cinemas not only a waste of time but also think of it as unnecessary spending of money. For instance, the tickets for movies are over-priced, snacks are very expensive there, and above all audience is not allowed to bring their own food. Conversely, despite some of the major apps, entertainment apps are subscription free, where one can watch every kind of entertainment. For all these reasons, people prefer online movies platforms to cinemas and theaters.

However, some people still believe cinemas and theaters are necessary both economically and culturally. This is due the fact that cinemas and theatres earn a lot by selling their tickets and snacks in cinema hall. For instance, some people, especially elders, love watching stage dramas, presenting our culture, in theaters. All in all, theaters and cinemas are the traditional ways to watch entertainment, and some consider them more important.

To sum up, internet has replaced theaters and cinemas, by providing a very easy access to every sort of entertainment, whether it is a movie, a drama, an anthem, or any kind of stage performance.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 6.0

The student addresses all parts of the task by discussing both views on the importance of theatres and cinemas in the digital age, and clearly provides an own opinion stating that technology has reduced their need. The position is maintained throughout the essay. Main ideas are presented, such as the economic factors of expensive tickets and snacks versus free online streaming, and cultural aspects like traditional stage dramas. However, some ideas feel slightly under-developed or general, such as the brief mention of cultural benefits and elders watching stage dramas. While the development is somewhat basic, the prompt's requirements are appropriately met with relevant arguments provided in each body paragraph.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 6.0

The response features a clear overall progression and logical arrangement of paragraphs, moving from an introduction outlining the debate and personal stance, through two body paragraphs exploring both sides, to a concise conclusion. Cohesive devices are employed with reasonable success, using linking expressions like 'However', 'For instance', 'Conversely', and 'To sum up'. Nevertheless, referencing and referencing links are occasionally clunky or repetitive. For instance, the transition 'This is due the fact that' contains a grammatical slip ('due to the fact that'), and the paragraphing, while functional, could show greater sophistication. Overall organisation is clear and the logical progression is maintained throughout.

Lexical Resource — Band 5.5

The student demonstrates an adequate vocabulary range for the task, successfully attempting less common items such as 'technological advancements', 'fast-paced world', and 'subscription free'. However, there are noticeable word-choice and prepositional errors, such as 'online-platforms' and 'due the fact that'. Some phrases are slightly awkward or unnatural, like 'movies platforms' instead of 'movie platforms'. Despite these occasional inaccuracies, the vocabulary is sufficient to convey the intended meaning clearly, and communication is never impeded by lexical limitations.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 5.5

The essay displays a mix of simple and complex sentence forms, demonstrating some variety in grammatical structures. There are several instances of successful complex sentences, such as concessive clauses ('Although...'). However, a number of grammatical errors and missing articles are present throughout the text, including 'audiet_ce is not allowed', 'due the fact', and 'internet has replaced'. Punctuation is generally acceptable, and while errors occur, the majority of simple sentences are error-free and the errors do not impede overall communication, placing the response solidly in the band 6 category.
