Student answer (Band 8.0)
The rapid development of digital technology has transformed the way people consume entertainment. While some argue that theatres and cinemas have become unnecessary because almost unlimited content is now available online, others believe that these places continue to have significant economic and cultural value. This essay will discuss both views before explaining why I believe theatres and cinemas remain important.
On the one hand, there are several reasons why people consider theatres and cinemas less important today. The internet has made entertainment more convenient and accessible than ever before. People can watch films, television programmes, live performances and other forms of entertainment from their homes using streaming platforms. This is particularly attractive because it saves time and money spent travelling to a cinema or theatre. In addition, online services allow viewers to choose what they want to watch and pause or replay content whenever they wish. As a result, traditional entertainment venues may seem less necessary to people who value convenience and flexibility.
On the other hand, theatres and cinemas continue to provide benefits that online entertainment cannot completely replace. Economically, these venues create employment for actors, directors, technicians, ticket sellers, cleaners and many other workers. Cinemas also generate income for local businesses such as restaurants and shops, particularly in busy commercial areas. From a cultural perspective, theatres and cinemas provide a shared experience in which people watch and discuss performances together. Live theatre, in particular, allows audiences to experience actors performing in real time, while cinemas offer a large-screen and high-quality audiovisual experience that is difficult to reproduce at home. Furthermore, traditional venues can help preserve local languages, artistic traditions and cultural stories.
In my opinion, although online entertainment has reduced the need to visit theatres and cinemas regularly, it has not made them obsolete. Digital platforms are excellent for convenient and inexpensive entertainment, but physical venues offer social, artistic and cultural experiences that cannot be fully replicated online. Rather than disappearing, theatres and cinemas are likely to remain important while adapting to changing audience expectations.
In conclusion, the growth of online entertainment has made traditional venues less essential for everyday viewing, mainly because of greater convenience and choice. Nevertheless, their economic contribution and their role in creating shared cultural experiences mean that theatres and cinemas continue to have an important place in modern society.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 8.0
The response fully addresses all parts of the task by discussing both views—that theatres and cinemas are no longer important due to online entertainment, and that they remain economically and culturally significant—while clearly stating the writer's own position throughout. The introduction outlines the essay structure, and the body paragraphs extend and support ideas well. For instance, the economic benefits are illustrated by mentioning employment for actors, technicians, and local businesses, while the cultural perspective highlights shared experiences and the preservation of artistic traditions. The ideas are thoroughly developed and logically supported with relevant examples, meeting the criteria for a high band score.
Coherence and Cohesion — Band 8.0
Ideas are logically sequenced and the progression throughout the essay is clear. Each paragraph has a distinct central topic, starting with a well-formulated introduction, followed by balanced body paragraphs addressing each view, an opinion paragraph, and a concise conclusion. Cohesive devices such as 'On the one hand', 'On the other hand', 'In my opinion', and 'In conclusion' are used naturally and effectively to guide the reader through the argument. Referencing and substitution are managed skilfully, and paragraphing is used both sufficiently and appropriately, ensuring the text flows smoothly without mechanical errors.
Lexical Resource — Band 8.0
The student demonstrates a wide, fluent, and flexible range of vocabulary appropriate for an academic discussion. Less common and precise items are utilised skilfully, such as 'consume entertainment', 'obsolete', 'audiovisual experience', and 'audience expectations'. Word choice and collocations are generally accurate, with only rare minor awkwardness. For example, phrases like 'shared experience', 'preserve local languages', and 'economic contribution' show a strong command of lexical resource and the ability to express complex ideas with clarity and precision.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 8.0
The essay displays a wide range of structures, incorporating both complex and compound sentences with a high degree of control. The majority of sentences are error-free. Complex structures such as 'While some argue that theatres and cinemas have become unnecessary because almost unlimited content is now available online' and 'Live theatre, in particular, allows audiences to experience actors performing in real time' demonstrate grammatical flexibility. Only very occasional minor errors or punctuation slips occur, but these never impede communication or detract from the sophisticated flow of the essay.
