IELTS Writing Task 2 question

Some people say that in the digital age, theatres and cinemas are no longer important as people can watch all the entertainment they want online. Others argue that theatres and cinemas are still important both economically and culturally.

Discuss both these views and give your own opinion.

Give reasons for your answer and include any relevant examples from your own knowledge or experience.

Student answer (Band 5.5)

Nowadays, the internet is growing at a rapid pace. It has become so popular, that all generations, independently from their age, use it everyday. As a rule, when something rises, another falls. Although most people argue on this quesiton, there is no a final desicion yet. And the quesiton is: "Are cinemas and theatres are no longer important as people have an access to any type of entertainment on line in the digital age?"

There are only two variations of the answer: "yes" and "no". The whole world can be divided into two parts, and the first one contains from those who think that there's no need in cinemas or theatres anymore. As in every debate question, the reason is strong and solid:

People have the full access to the internet. They can use it for entertainment, and also for bad intentions. You can find almost every film, which has already produced and even the ones which hasn't. There's already no need to go to the cinema, when you can watch it from home, for free, with all comfort things.

What about a theater? No one's watching it anymore. Actors are not being paid as if they worked in social media, also plots are boring and they are mostly history-connected.

Although the opinion provided above, there are stronger reasons, which support going and watching films and role plays. Firstly, you can watch the film with your friends, parents, or other relatives. Even though you can do the same in home, emotions and feelings are different from the online-format.

Secondly, most of the adults' population have a solid idea, which says that role plays are important for our mental health, and they are responsible for our emotional and psychological development. We can learn how to show and how to hide our emotions properly, we can get to know how people are so calm, or otherwise, are so energetic and boosted through good-quality role-plays.

Lastly, there are two reasons which are close to each other. One lets considering about population, which's part will be left with no job, after the redesign of the entertainment world. And another one, the most valuable reason in my opinion, is the lack of the cultural study. People are starting to forget about their culture, rich of data history, and their great country. This loss eventually leads to a lack of inner peace of a person, and the personality will be badly affected.

Referencing is also occasionally unclear, such as 'most of the adults' population have a solid idea, which says...' Overall organisation is evident, but the flow and logical progression between ideas suffer from awkward linking and abrupt shifts.

Lexical Resource — Band 5.5

The candidate has an adequate range of vocabulary for the task, successfully communicating everyday ideas about the internet, entertainment, and culture. There are attempts to use less common items and phrasing, such as 'digital age,' 'economic and culturally,' and 'inner peace.' However, there are notable word choice errors and unnatural collocations throughout, such as 'with all comfort things' instead of 'comfortably,' and 'role plays' used instead of 'plays' or 'theater performances.' Spelling is generally accurate, but awkward phrasing ('the adults' population,' 'rich of data history') slightly limits precision.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 5.0

The writer attempts a mix of simple and complex sentence forms, utilizing conditional structures and relative clauses (e.g., 'Although most people argue on this quesiton, there is no a final desicion yet'). However, the text contains a high frequency of grammatical errors and unnatural punctuation. Examples include spelling and article errors ('on quesiton,' 'a final desicion,' 'the full access,' 'in home'), incorrect preposition use ('independently from their age'), and awkward phrasing ('there's no need in cinemas').
