Student answer (Band 5.5)

There has been a lot of debate over whether or not movies and theatres contribute in many significant manners. Some people argue that watching movie in cinemas and theatres is no difference then watching them on your screen. So what is the point? Others disagree saying doing so is important for a country both economically and culturally. Both views will be discussed below before forming an opinion.

In the technological era, when you can find any great movie or theatrical performance online, there is no need to spend money on to go to the movie theatre. for instance, research shows GEN-Z is increasingly favouring at home cinema experience over physically going to the theatres. According to them it is hustle free, economical and gives them complete freedom to watch at their own pace.

for others however, the preference is strikingly different they believe that cinemas and theatres are a great way of enhancing a country's economical growth and cultural impact. the Indian Tamil film industry would suffice as a good example here. despite being the one of the poorest country the Indian Tamil industry managed to produce some of the highest crossing movies worldwide which had undoubtedly benefited both the economy and industry greatly.it has put India's name in international film festival earning it global recognition and funds and grants to keep making great pieces.

In conclusion, while both views had their sound argument my affinity lies more toward the later, I think cinemas and theatres have major contributions toward country's GDP and image building.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 5.5

The student addresses all parts of the task by discussing both views—the obsolescence of theatres in the digital age versus their ongoing economic and cultural significance—and provides a clear personal opinion in the introduction and conclusion. Ideas are relevant, such as the mention of Gen-Z preferences and the Indian film industry as an example. However, the development of these ideas is somewhat limited and generalized. For instance, the discussion on the Indian film industry contains factual confusion ('highest crossing movies', 'poorest country') which weakens the support, and the explanation of the first view lacks depth. While a clear position is maintained throughout, the reasoning would benefit from fuller elaboration to reach a higher band. Overall, the response meets the core requirements of Task Achievement, earning a solid Band 6.0.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 5.5

The essay displays a coherent overall arrangement with a clear four-paragraph structure comprising an introduction, two body paragraphs, and a conclusion. Logical progression is generally maintained, as each paragraph serves a distinct purpose. However, cohesion is often faulty or mechanical. There are numerous basic punctuation and capitalization errors that disrupt the flow, such as missing capital letters at the beginnings of sentences ('for instance, research shows...', 'for others however...', 'despite being the one of the poorest country...', 'it has put...'). Furthermore, referencing and cohesive links are sometimes awkward or missing. Paragraphing is used appropriately to separate the contrasting viewpoints, but the mechanical execution of sentence boundaries and transitional markers limits the score to a Band 5.5.

Lexical Resource — Band 5.5

The student demonstrates an adequate range of vocabulary for the task, attempting some less common lexical items such as 'technological era', 'theatrical performance', 'economical growth', and 'international film festival'. However, there are noticeable inaccuracies in word choice, collocation, and word form throughout the text. Examples include 'hustle free' instead of 'hassle-free', 'highest crossing movies' instead of 'highest-grossing movies', 'sound argument' instead of 'sound arguments', and 'the later' instead of 'the latter'. Spelling and morphological slips are frequent enough to cause occasional hesitation for the reader, though they do not completely impede communication. This performance aligns well with the Band 5.5 descriptors for Lexical Resource.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 5.0

The student attempts a mix of simple and complex sentence forms, utilizing structures such as conditional and concessive clauses ('while both views had their sound argument my affinity lies...'). However, grammatical accuracy is weak, with frequent errors in punctuation, subject-verb agreement, and article usage. Run-on sentences and comma splices are present, such as in the conclusion ('...affinity lies more toward the later, I think cinemas...'). Other errors include missing articles ('being the one of the poorest country') and tense inconsistencies ('had their sound argument'). Because errors are frequent and occasionally cause difficulty for the reader, while complex structures are often faulty, a Band 5.0 is appropriate.
