IELTS Writing Task 2 question

Some people say that in the digital age, theatres and cinemas are no longer important as people can watch all the entertainment they want online. Others argue that theatres and cinemas are still important both economically and culturally.

Discuss both these views and give your own opinion.

Give reasons for your answer and include any relevant examples from your own knowledge or experience.

Student answer (Band 5.5)

There has been a lot of debate over whether or not movies and theatres contribute in any significant manner. Some people argue that watching movies in cinemas or theatres is no different than watching them on your screen at home, so what is the point? Others disagree, saying doing so is important for a country, both economically and culturally. Both views will be discussed below before forming an opinion.

In this technological era, when you can find any great movie or theatrical performance online, there is no need to spend money to go to the movie theatres. For example, research shows Gen Z is increasingly favouring an at-home cinema experience over physically going to the theatres. According to them, it is economical, hassle-free, and gives them complete freedom to watch at their own pace.

For others, however, the view is strikingly different. For them, Cinemas and theatres are means to obtaining global recognition along with the added benefit of improved economy. The Indian Tamil film industry, also known as Tollywood, for instance, would suffice as a good example here. Despite being from one of the poorest countries, the Indian Tamil industry has managed to produce some of the highest-grossing movies worldwide, which has undoubtedly benefited both the economy and the industry greatly. It has put India's name in international film festivals, earning it global recognition and funds and grants to keep making great pieces.

In conclusion, while both views have their sound argument, my affinity lies more towards the latter. I think cinemas and theatres have major contribution to a country's GDP and image-building.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 5.5

The student addresses all parts of the task by discussing both views on the importance of theatres and cinemas in the digital age, and presents a clear personal opinion in the introduction and conclusion. The ideas are generally relevant and extended with examples, such as mentioning Gen Z's shift towards at-home viewing and referencing the Indian film industry. However, the development of ideas leans towards over-generalisation in places, and the connection between the example of Tollywood and economic benefits is stated rather than fully explored. Overall, the response meets the criteria for Band 6.5, but fits best into Band 6.0 due to some under-developed arguments and minor sweeping generalisations in the body paragraphs.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 5.5

The essay has a clear, logical overall arrangement with a standard four-paragraph structure. Introduction and conclusion are present, and body paragraphs follow a recognizable pattern. Cohesive devices are used to connect ideas, such as 'For example', 'For others, however', and 'In conclusion'. However, some referencing is slightly imprecise or mechanical, such as 'For them, Cinemas and theatres are...', and the paragraph transitions could be smoother. Paragraphing is used appropriately to separate different views. This performance aligns well with the Band 6 descriptor, where information and ideas are coherent overall, although cohesion can occasionally feel somewhat mechanical.

Lexical Resource — Band 6.0

The student uses an adequate range of vocabulary suitable for the task, successfully attempting less common items such as 'technological era', 'hassle-free', 'global recognition', and 'highest-grossing'. There are, however, some slight inaccuracies in word choice and collocation, most notably referring to the Tamil film industry as 'Tollywood' while mischaracterizing India as 'one of the poorest countries' in this specific context, as well as minor lexical slips. Despite these occasional flaws, the vocabulary is sufficient to allow the message to be communicated clearly without causing misunderstanding for the reader, which is characteristic of Band 6.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 5.5

The writer employs a mix of simple and complex sentence forms throughout the response, successfully using conditional and dependent clauses like 'In this technological era, when you can find any great movie...'. There are several grammatical errors and punctuation issues, such as capitalization errors ('Cinemas') and minor awkwardness in phrasing ('my affinity lies more towards the latter', 'have major contribution'). However, these errors do not impede communication and the reader can easily follow the arguments being presented. The control over grammar and sentence structures is indicative of a solid Band 6 performance.
