Some people say that in the digital age, theatres and cinemas are no longer important as people can watch all the entertainment they want online. Others argue that theatres and cinemas are still important both economically and culturally.
Discuss both these views and give your own opinion.
Give reasons for your answer and include any relevant examples from your own knowledge or experience.
Student answer (Band 5.5)
In today's world, we can watched anything on our phones, rather it's a news or a movie or a series, we can watch evrything on our phones. So, many people argue that the need for theatres and cinemas are no longer a need, rather an extra thing in our society.
However, it is not a correct view. Cinemas and theatres are cultural heritage. They are the part of our society and our culture. Moreover, they are the way by which we can connect more with our surroundings, our family and ourselves, because when we decided to go on a movie night we actually wanted to escape this digital era and breath in to the surrounding.
This little escaping actually helped us to be connected more with the society we are living. Like if we go to cinemas we meet new people there. The social bond that just vanish somewhere starting to re-alive.
In my opinion, although we have our little theatre and cinema in our hands, this doesn't meams we no longer need cinemas or theatres. The movie watched in a cinemas or a show watched in a theatre has more long lasting effect then the ones watched in our mobile phone. Moreover, with the advancement in every field, a huge number of advancements can be seen in this area as well. Now, cinema no longer provides a full environment rather it provides more of a 3d or 4d environment, where you can feel you are a part of that movie. So, it actually made the watching experience more beautiful and long lasting.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 5.5
The response addresses both views required by the prompt, discussing the online entertainment perspective versus the economic and cultural importance of cinemas and theatres, while also providing a clear personal opinion. However, the development of ideas is somewhat limited and repetitive. For instance, the argument about social bonds is introduced with phrases like 'we meet new people there' and 'The social bond that just vanish somewhere starting to re-alive,' but these points lack deeper elaboration or specific examples. Similarly, the discussion of 3D and 4D environments is a relevant point, yet it remains brief. The writer covers all parts of the task as required, but the ideas are not fully extended, placing the response firmly at Band 6.0 according to the task response descriptors.
Coherence and Cohesion — Band 6.0
The essay presents a coherent overall arrangement with a discernible introduction, body points, and a concluding stance. Paragraphing is attempted, though the division is somewhat unconventional, with a very short opening paragraph and abrupt transitions between ideas. Cohesive devices are used, but they are often basic or repetitive, such as the frequent reliance on 'Moreover' and 'So' to link sentences. Referencing is occasionally unclear, as seen in phrases like 'this little escaping' or 'this doesn't meams we no longer need cinemas or theatres.' Progression is sometimes hindered by jerky transitions and repetitive sentence starters. Overall, the organizational features are adequate for a Band 5.5 to 6.0 level, where cohesion is at times faulty and mechanical.
Lexical Resource — Band 5.5
The student demonstrates an adequate range of vocabulary for the task, successfully communicating everyday concepts related to media and entertainment, such as 'digital era,' 'cultural heritage,' and 'entertainment.' However, there are numerous noticeable word choice errors and lexical inaccuracies, including 'we can watched' (grammar/verb form slip), 'evrything' (spelling), 'meams' (spelling), 'long lasting effect then' (incorrect preposition usage), and 're-alive' (coinage of a non-standard word). While less common items are attempted, inaccuracies in collocation and word formation are frequent. These errors do not completely impede communication because the writer's overall intent remains clear, aligning the vocabulary performance with Band 5.5 descriptors.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 5.5
The writing displays a mix of simple and complex sentence forms, demonstrating an attempt to use subordination and conditional structures, such as 'In my opinion, although we have our little theatre and cinema in our hands, this doesn't meams we no longer need cinemas or theatres.' Nevertheless, there are frequent grammatical errors throughout the text, including tense and agreement issues like 'we can watched' and 'the need for theatres and cinemas are no longer a need.' Punctuation is generally functional, but structural errors persist and occasionally strain the reader, preventing the text from reaching a Band 6.0 level where errors are fewer and less obtrusive. The control over grammar is most indicative of Band 5.5.
