Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 6.0
The response addresses all parts of the task by discussing both views—the decline of theatres in the digital age versus their ongoing economic and cultural importance—and provides a clear personal position throughout. In the introduction, the writer states that 'theatres and cinemas play a vauable role,' and this stance is maintained. The ideas are extended and supported with relevant examples, such as the employment provided to workers and the social aspects of going out with friends. However, there is a tendency to over-generalise and some points lack deep extension, such as the unsupported statistic regarding streaming platform earnings. Overall, the task is addressed well and meets the criteria for Band 6.5, leaning towards Band 6.0 due to some under-developed supporting arguments.
Coherence and Cohesion — Band 6.0
The response has a coherent overall arrangement with clear paragraphing, dividing the introduction, body paragraphs, and conclusion appropriately. Cohesive devices are used to signal logical progression, such as 'To commence with,' 'On the other hand,' and 'To conclude.' However, cohesion is sometimes faulty or mechanical. For instance, the transition 'if we talk about culture values when we go out to watch a movie' is quite abrupt and colloquial. Additionally, referencing is occasionally unclear, and pronoun usage could be more precise. Paragraphing is present and logically separates the contrasting views, but the internal flow within paragraphs occasionally feels disjointed. These features place the essay firmly at Band 6.0.
Lexical Resource — Band 5.5
The writer demonstrates an adequate range of vocabulary for the task, attempting less common items such as 'advancement of technology,' 'hectic schedule,' and 'cultural values.' However, there are noticeable spelling and word-choice errors throughout the text, including 'beleive' instead of believe, 'eassy' instead of essay, 'vauable' instead of valuable, 'mobilephones' instead of mobile phones, 'convinient' instead of convenient, 'emoployment' instead of employment, and 'socail' instead of social. While these errors do not severely impede communication, their frequency prevents the score from reaching a higher band. The writer has sufficient vocabulary to convey meaning, but lacks precision and control over spelling, making Band 5.5 the most accurate descriptor.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 5.0
The response attempts a mix of simple and complex sentence forms, utilizing subordinating conjunctions such as 'due to' and 'when'. However, there are frequent grammatical and punctuation errors, including capitalization issues ('i beleive', 'for example'), missing articles, run-on sentences, and subject-verb agreement errors (e.g., 'theatres and cinemas plays' instead of play). Punctuation is also problematic, with sentences starting with lowercase letters and missing terminal punctuation in places. Although the meaning is generally communicated despite these flaws, the high frequency of basic grammatical and mechanical errors restricts the score to a Band 5.0.
