Student answer (Band 6.0)

The rapid development of digital technology has transformed the way people consume entertainment. Many individuals believe that, theatres and cinemas are unnecessary because films and other forms of entertainment are easily be accessed online, while other half people argue that this venues continue to have important economic and cultural roles.

This essay will discuss both view before explaining why i believe cinema and theatres will remain relevant.

On the one hand, online entertainment have several advantages over traditional venues. People can now watch films, televisions programmes and live performances from their comfort zone, often at relatively low cost. Streaming online also provide a much wider choice of content and allow user to watch it whenever they wish. In addition, technological developments such as high-definition screens and surround sound have made the home viewing experience increasingly sophisticated. As a result, some people may see little reason to spend money and time travelling to a cinema or theatre.

On the other hand, theatres and cinemas offer experiences that cannot be completely replicated online. Watching a film on a large screen with high-quality sound, for example, can be considerably more immersive than viewing it on a television or mobile device. Similarly, attending a theatre performance allows audiences to experience live acting, music and interaction between performers and spectators. These venues also make an important contribution to local economies by creating jobs and generating income for restaurants, transport providers and other businesses. Furthermore, theatres in particular help preserve cultural traditions by providing a space for live performances and artistic expression.

In my view, although online entertainment will continue to grow, it is unlikely to make cinemas and theatres obsolete. The two forms of entertainment serve somewhat different purposes: digital platforms provide convenience and choice, whereas physical venues provide social, cultural and immersive experiences. Therefore, theatres and cinemas are likely to remain an important part of modern society despite the expansion of online entertainment.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 6.5

The response successfully addresses all parts of the prompt by discussing both the view that cinemas and theatres are no longer important due to online entertainment and the counter-view regarding their economic and cultural value. The student also clearly states their own opinion in the introduction and reiterates it in the conclusion. Ideas are well developed and supported with relevant examples, such as the immersive nature of large screens, live interaction in theatres, and economic contributions to local businesses. The position is maintained consistently throughout the essay, demonstrating a strong grasp of the task requirements matching Band 7 performance.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 6.5

The essay displays a clear logical organisation and progression throughout. Information and ideas are coherently distributed into appropriate paragraphs, with a clear introduction, two body paragraphs exploring opposing views, and a well-formulated conclusion. Cohesive devices such as 'On the one hand', 'On the other hand', 'In addition', and 'Furthermore' are used effectively to guide the reader through the arguments, although referencing has minor mechanical flaws such as 'this venues' instead of 'these venues'. Paragraphing is handled skilfully, ensuring each paragraph has a distinct central topic.

Lexical Resource — Band 5.5

The student demonstrates a sufficient range of vocabulary to allow some flexibility and precision, employing terms such as 'obsolete', 'immersive', 'preserves cultural traditions', and 'sophisticated'. Less common lexical items are attempted with some awareness of style and collocation, though there are occasional inaccuracies in word choice, such as 'from their comfort zone' (instead of 'from the comfort of their homes') and 'other half people' (instead of 'others'). Spelling is generally accurate, and vocabulary errors do not impede communication, placing the response solidly in the Band 6 territory.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 6.0

The writer uses a mix of simple and complex sentence structures, including conditional and relative clauses. There are several instances of good complex structures, such as 'Watching a film on a large screen with high-quality sound... can be considerably more immersive than viewing it on a television'. However, a few grammatical errors persist, particularly with subject-verb agreement and preposition use, such as 'online entertainment have' (instead of 'has'), 'easily be accessed' (instead of 'be easily accessed'), and 'discuss both view' (instead of 'views'). Punctuation is mostly accurate, and errors rarely impede overall communication.
