Some people say that in the digital age, theatres and cinemas are no longer important as people can watch all the entertainment they want online. Others argue that theatres and cinemas are still important both economically and culturally.

Give reasons for your answer and include any relevant examples from your own knowledge or experience.

Student answer (Band 6.0)

In the modern era of digitalization many people believes , theatre and cinemas are no longer crucial and relevant because people can consume all entertainment content from online platforms at their home rather than going to theatre and cinema to watch movies . While the other group of peoples argues that cinemas and theatre are still relevant and crucial for culturally as well as economically but  from my point of view both are equally important and relevant and both have their benefits and drawbacks but i personally support cinema and theatres over online platforms

Digitalization has had a profound impact on people's way of consuming entertainment. In fact, it isolates individuals from the community and socializing, keeps them in their rooms, and makes them more sedentary. Nowadays, everyone chooses convenience and ease over leaving the house and standing in a ticket counter queue to watch a movie. Instead, they simply buy subscriptions to online platforms such as Amazon Prime and Netflix.

On the other hand, arguments supporting traditional cinemas are compelling. Economically, cinemas are crucial because they generate numerous job opportunities and boost local commercial growth. Culturally, watching films in a theatre fosters a shared sense of community, as audience members experience collective emotional reactions such as laughing or crying together.

In conclusion, I believe that both have their own advantages and disadvantages but from my point of view i will support theatres and cinemas group of people side because it far outweigh the advantages over the online entertairment platform.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 6.0

The response addresses all parts of the prompt by discussing both views—that theatres are obsolete due to online streaming, and that they remain economically and culturally vital—while also presenting a clear personal opinion. The student's position is stated in the introduction and reinforced in the conclusion. Ideas are adequately extended and supported, such as mentioning specific streaming platforms like Amazon Prime and Netflix, and highlighting the economic job creation and cultural shared experience of physical cinemas. However, the development in the introduction is slightly repetitive, stating that both are important and have drawbacks, yet declaring a preference for cinemas. Overall, the task is successfully fulfilled, aligning well with the requirements for a Band 6.5 or 7.0.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 6.0

The essay displays a clear overall progression and logical organisation. Information and ideas are arranged into distinct paragraphs, starting with an introduction, moving to the drawbacks of digital consumption and the merits of traditional cinemas, and finishing with a conclusion. Cohesive devices such as 'While the other group of peoples', 'In fact', 'On the other hand', and 'In conclusion' are used to guide the reader. However, referencing is occasionally repetitive, and some sentences in the introduction are run-on and lack smooth transitions. Paragraphing is used sufficiently and appropriately, but the excessive length of the first compound-complex opening sentences slightly disrupts the flow, justifying a solid Band 6.0.

Lexical Resource — Band 6.0

The student uses an adequate range of vocabulary for the task, successfully attempting less common items such as 'profound impact', 'sedentary', 'commercial growth', and 'collective emotional reactions'. However, there are noticeable word-choice and collocation errors, such as 'peoples' instead of 'people', 'culturally' instead of 'cultural' in the phrase 'for culturally as well as economically', and 'standing in a ticket counter queue' instead of 'box office queue'. Furthermore, spelling and grammatical form errors like 'entertairment' detract from precision. While the vocabulary is sufficient to communicate the main points clearly, these recurring lexical inaccuracies cap the score at Band 6.0.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 6.0

The writer attempts a mix of simple and complex sentence forms, utilising relative clauses and conditional structures. There are, however, several grammatical and punctuation errors throughout the text. Examples include subject-verb agreement issues like 'many people believes' and missing articles or incorrect prepositions, such as 'at their home' instead of 'at home'. Punctuation is also problematic, notably the incorrect spacing before commas and periods in the first paragraph. Although these errors do not seriously impede overall communication, they occur frequently enough to prevent the response from reaching Band 6.5, making Band 6.0 a fair and accurate reflection of the grammatical control demonstrated.
