Student answer (Band 5.5)

Many people argue about "theatres and cinemas" are no longer needed while there is a portion of the population that can never agree to this. Even though we can watch all the movies and dramas online but saying that theatres and cinemas are no longer needed is wrong.

I would like to state some reasons which may tell us why people who say they are still important. One of the major reasons people still want them is that the thrill and the joy cinemas and theatre provides. The way one can feel movies and dramas in real life can never be matched by watching them online. In theatres , we can see actors acting without any cuts , it is raw and provides and natural emotion to it which can only be felt in real life and not behind the screens. Also , they support creators of movies and dramas as most of the revenue is generated through theatres and cinemas and producers really are dependent on it. It urges them to make more entertaining movies and dramas.

Now for the people who say they can watch all the entertainment online, they are right to some extent but not completely. They can watch everything but they cannot feel the thrill and patience of watching actors perform dramas. Also, the quality of the movie and the colors are way different from watching them in a cinema. Moreover , movies are released earlier in theatres then of cinemas and they are not instantly available online. The patience required is also on another level. Yes , it is easy and convenient to watch movies online with friends and family. But saying that it can replace theatres and cinemas is wrong.

All in all, theatres and cinemas can't be replaced by online platforms. Online platforms are convenient to watch movies in times of boredom but movie dates remain a thing.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 5.5

The response addresses all parts of the task by discussing both views—the decline of theatres in the digital age versus their continued economic and cultural importance—and provides a clear personal opinion that they remain relevant. The ideas are generally relevant, such as discussing emotional engagement, authenticity, and box-office revenue. However, some arguments, such as the mention of movie release windows and 'patience,' are slightly repetitive or under-developed. For example, stating that 'movies are released earlier in theatres then of cinemas' is slightly confused in terminology. The position is maintained throughout, but further extension of the economic impacts or cultural arguments would elevate the task response to a higher band. Overall, the response meets the core requirements of Task Achievement at a Band 6.0 level.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 5.5

The essay displays a coherent overall arrangement with a clear introduction, body paragraphs addressing each viewpoint, and a concluding remark. Paragraphing is utilised to separate distinct ideas, such as in the transition from discussing the proponents of theatres to those favoring online platforms. However, cohesive devices are sometimes mechanical or repetitive, such as the frequent use of 'Also' and 'Now for the people who say'. Referencing is occasionally slightly unclear, and logical progression between sentences could be smoother. For instance, the transition into the counter-argument about online viewers relies heavily on conversational phrasing. These formatting and linking limitations place this response firmly in the Band 6.0 category for Coherence and Cohesion.

Lexical Resource — Band 5.5

The student uses an adequate range of vocabulary for the task, successfully communicating ideas about entertainment, revenue, and convenience. Words and phrases such as 'revenue,' 'creators,' 'convenient,' and 'emotional engagement' show an appropriate range. However, there are noticeable limitations and occasional word choice inaccuracies, such as 'provides and natural emotion' instead of 'provides a natural emotion,' and confusing 'theatres and cinemas' with release windows. There are also informal expressions used, such as 'movie dates remain a thing,' which detracts from academic register. Spelling is generally accurate, but the lexical range lacks the flexibility and precision of higher bands, making Band 6.0 the most suitable descriptor.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 5.5

The response demonstrates a mix of simple and complex sentence structures. The student attempts complex forms, such as concession clauses ('Even though we can watch all the movies and dramas online but saying...'), though this specific sentence contains a conjunction error (combining 'Even though' with 'but'). Other sentences show good control, but grammatical errors persist throughout, such as subject-verb agreement issues ('thrill and the joy... provides' instead of 'provide') and preposition misuse ('then of cinemas' instead of 'than in cinemas'). Punctuation has occasional minor flaws, such as spacing before commas. These errors rarely impede overall communication, allowing the essay to achieve a Band 6.0.
