Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 6.5

The response addresses all parts of the prompt by discussing both the view that theatres and cinemas are no longer important due to online entertainment and the counterargument that they retain economic and cultural value. A clear position is stated in the introduction and maintained throughout the essay. Ideas are extended and supported with relevant examples, such as the mention of streaming platforms like Netflix and Disney+, as well as the economic impact on related businesses like restaurants and cafes. However, there is a slight tendency to overgeneralise in certain points, and some development could be slightly more analytical to reach higher bands. Overall, the requirements of the task are adequately met with a well-developed discussion.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 6.0

The essay presents a clear logical organisation and progression throughout. It is divided into four well-structured paragraphs, featuring a clear introduction, two body paragraphs representing opposing views, and a concise conclusion. Cohesive devices are used reasonably well to signal transitions, such as 'On the one hand' and 'On the other hand'. However, referencing and cohesion are occasionally faulty or mechanical, as seen in minor awkwardness with article usage and transitional flow. Paragraphing is used sufficiently and appropriately, ensuring the reader can follow the writer's arguments without difficulty.

Lexical Resource — Band 5.5

The student demonstrates an adequate range of vocabulary for the task, successfully attempting less common items such as 'subscription fee', 'employment opportunities', and 'coexist'. However, there are noticeable word-choice and grammatical form errors, such as writing 'economical values' instead of 'economic values', 'perceptive' instead of 'perspective', and 'traditional for of art' instead of 'traditional form of art'. While these errors do not impede communication, they reflect some inaccuracy in collocation and lexical control, placing the writing firmly in the Band 6 category.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 5.5

The response displays a mix of simple and complex sentence forms, utilizing relative clauses and conditional structures reasonably well. There are several grammatical errors and awkward phrasing choices throughout the text, such as 'In this essay will discuss both perceptive and explain why i am supporting to theatres and cinemas' (missing subject and preposition error), 'the busy people whose prefer' (incorrect relative pronoun), and 'can be enjoy' (passive voice error). Although these errors occur with some frequency, the majority of sentences are understandable, and punctuation is generally controlled, meaning communication is rarely impeded.
