Student answer (Band 6.0)

In an era characterized by rapid social and technological change, some people reflect that in the digital age theatres and cinemas are no longer vital. On the other hand, some individuals believe that they are still important. In my opinion, cinemas and theaters still have an important role in shaping the economy and culture.

On one hand, some individuals reflect that theaters and cinemas are not important in today's world of technology because the digital era provides us with numerous lucrative options for entertainment. Nowadays, numerous people prefer to watch films, series and dramas on their gadgets; while staying in their comfort zone and it is invariably easy for them and they do not have to go outside to watch something. Moreover, people do not have to wait in a long queue because they can watch whatever they want with just a single click. For instance, new movies have a waiting list for tickets and advance bookings. While on the other side, every new and old movie is available on the internet therefore, viewers do not have to wait for it.

Some people believe that cinemas and theatres still have an obligatory role, theaters are connected to the culture and a well-developed culture gives boost to the economy of the country. When people visit to watch theatre plays, they are giving importance to the actors who represent our culture. Moreover, when people buy tickets for cinemas and theatres, they are contributing to the economy of the state. Meanwhile individuals watch films and dramas on big screens with their friends and family, which is unable to watch at home.

In my opinion, I acknowledge that the digital era has provided us numerous benefits in every field of life, it is very convenient to watch anything at home. However, I believe that cinemas and theaters are inevitable because they are connected to our ancestors' cultural values and they are contributing to the economic growth of the country.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 6.0

The response addresses all parts of the prompt by discussing both views—that digital alternatives make theatres obsolete versus their continued economic and cultural importance—and provides a clear personal opinion in the introduction and conclusion. Ideas are relevant, such as comparing the convenience of online streaming with the communal and cultural value of live venues. However, some arguments lack deep extension, particularly the brief mention of economic contributions, which could be elaborated with more specific examples. The position is clear throughout, and the main ideas are sufficiently supported to meet the Band 6.5 to 7 threshold. Overall, the task response is well-structured and covers all requirements appropriately.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 6.0

The essay displays a logical overall progression with a clear introduction, body paragraphs addressing each viewpoint, and a distinct concluding opinion. Cohesive devices such as 'On the other hand', 'Moreover', and 'For instance' are used to guide the reader through the arguments, though some transitions feel a bit mechanical. Paragraphing is used appropriately, with each main idea segregated into its own paragraph. Referencing is generally clear, although occasional awkward phrasing in transitional sentences slightly disrupts the flow. The organizational structure easily satisfies the Band 6 descriptor while showing strong elements of Band 7 logic.

Lexical Resource — Band 5.5

The student demonstrates an adequate range of vocabulary suitable for the task, successfully employing terms such as 'lucrative options', 'advance bookings', and 'economic growth'. However, there are some inaccuracies in word choice and collocation, such as 'films, series and dramas on their gadgets; while staying in their comfort zone' and 'visit to watch theatre plays'. Attempts at less common vocabulary are evident, but occasional minor slips in lexical precision prevent the score from reaching a higher band. Spelling is accurate throughout the text, and communication is never impeded by lexical limitations.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 5.5

The essay demonstrates a mix of simple and complex sentence structures, featuring relative clauses and participial phrases such as 'In an era characterized by rapid social and technological change'. There are several grammatical errors and punctuation awkwardness, notably run-on sentences and comma splices, such as 'Nowadays, numerous people prefer to watch films, series and dramas on their gadgets; while staying in their comfort zone and it is invariably easy...' Despite these errors, the meaning remains clear and they do not impede communication. The control over grammar is sufficient for a Band 6 rating.
