Student answer (Band 6.0)

Some people say that in the modern age, theatres and cinemas are less important due to evalution of OTT platforms. Some people argues that theatres are still important because of it's contribution in the economy as well as culturally. In my opinion, people are most likely to prefers OTT rather than going to cinemas.

Firstly, movie theatre's ticket prices are costlier than before for that, people rather watch movies on OTT. Due to, not only its convenience but also for their competetive pricing. As example, OTT provides variety of movies with just one subscription, also it have movies in all genres at one place. Furthermore, it provides flexibiliy to watch a film. For instance, people don't need to give spare time for just movies, people can watch movies at anytime of the day at their home with own comfort zone.

Secondly, other group of people believe that theatres produced significant amount of money, which helps the economy to rise. With large multiplex they can place more than one film in many diffrent screens, which helps them to make more money. Furthermore, the dramas also showcase state's culture and tradition. Likewise, Kathakali is a famous art form of south states. Performing those kind of shows promotes states origins and culture.

In my option, cinemas are no longer relevant for many people nowadays. Internet provides verity of content at one place.

In conclusion, while theatres and cinemas undeniably play a vital role in preserving cultural heritage and driving local economies through multiplex revenues and live arts, the digital age has fundamentally shifted viewer habits. Given the unmatched convenience, flexibility, and cost-effectiveness of streaming platforms, the traditional cinema experience is increasingly becoming secondary. Ultimately, while live theatrical performances will always hold cultural value, it is my belief that cinemas are losing their mainstream relevance as audiences increasingly favor the comfort and variety offered by online entertainment.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 6.0

The response successfully addresses all parts of the prompt by discussing both views—the decline of cinemas due to online entertainment and their ongoing economic and cultural importance—while clearly stating the writer's own opinion. Ideas are generally well-supported with examples, such as reference to subscription models and cultural art forms like Kathakali. However, there are minor lapses in task focus where the body paragraphs drift slightly into generalized descriptions rather than deeply evaluating the prompt's core tension. Additionally, the writer's stated position shifts slightly between paragraphs, appearing somewhat contradictory regarding whether cinemas are 'most likely to be preferred' versus 'no longer relevant for many people'. Despite these minor inconsistencies, all requirements of the task are addressed adequately, reflecting a Band 6.5 to 7.0 performance level, rounded to 6.5.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 6.0

The essay displays a coherent overall arrangement with a clear attempt at logical organisation. Paragraphing is utilised to separate the introduction, body paragraphs, and conclusion. Cohesive devices are employed to link ideas, such as 'Firstly,' 'Furthermore,' and 'In conclusion.' However, some cohesion is mechanical, and referencing is occasionally faulty, as seen with phrases like 'other group of people' lacking a proper article or determiner. The transition between the writer's opinion statement in the introduction and the subsequent body paragraphs feels a bit abrupt. Paragraphing could also be managed more naturally, as the fourth paragraph consists of just two sentences which disrupts the essay's flow. Overall, the organisational structure is clear enough to guide the reader through the arguments, aligning with a Band 6.0 descriptor.

Lexical Resource — Band 6.0

The student demonstrates an adequate range of vocabulary for the task, attempting less common terms such as 'competetive pricing,' 'cultural heritage,' and 'mainstream relevance.' However, there are numerous lexical errors and awkward word choices throughout the text, such as 'evalution' instead of 'evolution,' 'costlier than before for that,' and 'south states' instead of 'southern states.' Spelling errors also occur, including 'competetive' and 'flexibiliy.' While these inaccuracies and spelling slips do not impede communication, they restrict the lexical score. The writer shows some awareness of style and collocation, but frequent minor errors prevent the response from achieving a higher band, placing it firmly at Band 6.0.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 6.0

The response features a mix of simple and complex sentence forms, demonstrating attempts at varied structures such as concessive clauses ('while theatres and cinemas undeniably play...'). However, there are frequent grammatical errors in tense usage, article omission, and prepositional phrases. Examples include 'Some people argues,' 'due to, not only its convenience,' 'it have movies,' and 'In my option.' Punctuation errors are also present, such as unnecessary commas splitting prepositional phrases. Although these errors do not severely impede comprehension, they occur with enough frequency to demonstrate a lack of consistent control over complex structures. This profile corresponds directly to the Band 6 descriptor, where grammar and punctuation errors persist.
