Student answer (Band 5.5)

In today's digital era, online platforms have made people believe that theaters and cinemas are no longer essential for them, as they can access any kind of entertainment within a few seconds, however, some still believe that these are essential both economically and culturally.

On the one hand, I believe that online platforms have made it easier for us to consume any kind of social media in seconds through any digital device, for example, mobile phones and TVs. It has become a convenient source for people to enjoy their favourite kind of media just by sitting at home. Your digital device exposes you to different kinds of entertainment online; for instance, some people enjoy watching TV series more than movies, and the online platform does allow those consumers to explore various options and simply enjoy.

On the other hand, theaters and cinemas are still essential, for instance, in cinemas you actually get to enjoy the thrill whenever you consume any kind of entertainment there, and they are also considered as a good hangout spot. Whereas people can come to theaters to perform their art pieces, and one can learn new things when they visit a theater, something that is often not mentioned online. These places are also considered a source of employment for people, which results in a lower unemployment number.

In conclusion, although we can get a range of entertainment available online and can easily access that, theaters and cinemas are still crucial for a lot of folks in many ways. You can watch entertainment online if you're someone who does not like to go out a lot however, if you are a person who enjoys big screens, then you would love the cinemas and theaters.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 5.5

The response addresses all parts of the task by discussing both views—the dominance and convenience of online entertainment versus the enduring economic and cultural value of physical theaters and cinemas—and a clear personal opinion is presented. However, the development of ideas remains somewhat superficial. For instance, the economic argument is briefly stated as 'a source of employment for people, which results in a lower unemployment number,' but this point lacks concrete elaboration or specific examples. Similarly, the cultural perspective mentions that people can perform art pieces, but this is not fully explored. While the prompt is adequately answered, the arguments would benefit from greater depth and extension to reach higher bands. Therefore, a Band 6.0 is appropriate.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 5.5

The essay displays a coherent overall arrangement with a recognizable introduction, body paragraphs addressing each viewpoint, and a conclusion. Paragraphing is used logically to separate distinct themes. Cohesive devices are present, such as 'On the one hand' and 'On the other hand,' though some transitions feel a bit mechanical or repetitive, as seen with multiple consecutive uses of 'for instance' and 'for example.' Referencing is generally clear, but the connection between sentences occasionally lacks smooth progression, particularly in the transitions within the body paragraphs. Overall, the organizational structure is sound and serves the purpose of the essay, earning a Band 6.0.

Lexical Resource: Band 5.5

The vocabulary is adequate for the task, allowing the student to communicate their ideas clearly without major misunderstandings. There are attempts to use less common expressions such as 'digital era,' 'consume any kind of entertainment,' and 'hangout spot.' However, the vocabulary tends to be somewhat repetitive, relying heavily on words like 'entertainment,' 'online,' and 'digital device.' There are also minor lexical inaccuracies or awkward collocations, such as 'lower unemployment number' instead of 'unemployment rate.' Because the range of vocabulary is sufficient for basic communication but lacks the flexibility and precision required for higher bands, this warrants a Band 6.0.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.5

The writer demonstrates a mix of simple and complex sentence structures, incorporating relative clauses and conditional elements. However, punctuation and run-on sentence structures hinder clarity in places. For instance, the opening sentence is a comma splice, linking two independent clauses with just a comma before 'however.' Additionally, there are minor syntactic awkwardnesses throughout the text. Despite these errors, the grammatical mistakes do not impede overall communication, and the meaning remains clear to the reader. The control over grammar aligns well with the criteria for Band 6.0, reflecting a functional command of sentence forms with persistent minor errors.
