Student answer (Band 5.0)

Some people think that in the Internet age, theatres and cinema are no longer crucial as people can watch all entertainment they wish on internet. Others argue that theatres and cinemas are still essential for both economically and culturally. In my opinion, theatres and cinemas are no longer valid because many people wish to get entertained at their houses at their comfort zone and it is easy to access.

Firstly, the cinemas and theatres are out of fashion because people want to entertain themselves when they are in their comfort and it is more cheap to access to any sort or any genre of movies or dramas. For example, many applications that charges monthly subscription and gives you access to hundred different movies and series at the price of buying single movie ticket.

People find it more relaxing to watch movies and if they do not like it, they can change it within few seconds so it is more convient. Also, many tv channels and social media platforms shows different cultures. For example, tv channels from all over the world shows different dramas which represent their specific cultures. As this helps people to connect with their own cultures as well as know about others too.

In conclusion, the many other websites or applications are best alternatives of theatres and cinemas as they are economical as well as culture orientated and people enjoy them while being in any corner of world and even while lying in their bed.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 5.0

The response addresses the prompt by discussing both views and stating a personal opinion, meeting the basic requirements of the task. However, the length requirement is not met, as the response contains only 247 words against the 250-word minimum, which incurs a penalty in Task Achievement. The student's position is clear throughout, advocating that theatres and cinemas are outdated. While main ideas are introduced, such as comfort and economic savings, they are somewhat repetitive and lack deeper extension or diverse supporting examples. For instance, the point regarding home streaming is reiterated across paragraphs without expanding on cultural implications or providing substantial counter-argument analysis. Consequently, the task is addressed only partially, aligning with Band 5.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 5.0

The essay presents a recognizable overall structure with an introduction, body paragraphs, and a conclusion. However, the logical progression is hindered by repetitive arguments and awkward transitions. Cohesive devices are sometimes inaccurate or mechanical, such as 'Firstly' followed by no subsequent sequence markers like 'Secondly'. Referencing is occasionally unclear, as seen in the phrasing 'the many other websites or applications are best alternatives' in the conclusion. Paragraphing is attempted, but internal cohesion within paragraphs lacks smooth flow due to run-on sentences and weak connective links. These issues place the response solidly at Band 5.

Lexical Resource: Band 5.0

The vocabulary used is adequate for communicating basic ideas, but the range is limited and repetitive. The student relies on elementary terms such as 'good', 'movies', 'watch', and 'entertainment'. There are several noticeable word choice and collocation errors, including 'economically and culturally' instead of 'economic and cultural terms', 'more cheap' instead of 'cheaper', 'charges monthly subscription' instead of 'charge a monthly subscription', and 'hundred different movies' instead of 'hundreds of different movies'. Spelling and word formation errors also occur, such as 'convient' instead of 'convenient'. Because the vocabulary is minimally adequate yet contains frequent errors that occasionally strain the reader, a Band 5 is appropriate.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.0

The student attempts a mix of simple and complex sentence structures, but control over complex forms is inconsistent. Many sentences contain grammatical errors, particularly regarding article usage, pluralization, and subject-verb agreement. Examples include 'theatres and cinema are no longer crucial', 'on internet' instead of 'on the internet', 'any sort or any genre', and 'shows different cultures' where the subject and verb do not agree ('channels... shows'). Punctuation is generally basic, and sentence boundaries are occasionally blurred by run-on structures. Due to the frequent errors and the limited range of accurately controlled complex structures, the grammar aligns with Band 5 descriptors.
