Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 5.5
The response addresses all parts of the prompt by discussing both views—the decline of physical cinemas due to digital streaming and their ongoing economic and cultural importance—and provides a clear position throughout. The writer's stance is stated in the introduction and reinforced in the conclusion. However, the ideas are somewhat repetitive and lack deep development. For instance, the second body paragraph repeats the point about better sound and picture quality rather than truly expanding on the economic or cultural dimensions mentioned in the prompt. While the main arguments are relevant, the support remains somewhat generalized and brief. Therefore, the response aligns best with Band 6.
Coherence and Cohesion: Band 5.5
The essay demonstrates a clear overall arrangement with logical paragraphing, featuring an introduction, two body paragraphs representing opposing views, and a conclusion. Cohesive devices are used to signal transitions, such as 'On the one hand', 'On the other hand', and 'To conclude'. However, cohesion is at times mechanical or faulty, as seen in minor mechanical errors and punctuation issues. Referencing is occasionally unclear, and the flow between sentences can feel disjointed due to phrasing choices like 'To detail it out' and 'To explain it in detail'. These limitations place the response comfortably within the Band 6 descriptor.
Lexical Resource: Band 5.5
The student attempts a range of vocabulary appropriate for the academic prompt, using terms like 'contemporary era', 'scrutinize', 'convenient', and 'economically and culturally'. However, there are noticeable word-choice and spelling errors that detract from precision, such as 'propornent' instead of proponents, 'worthwile' instead of worthwhile, 'involes' instead of involves, and 'porstulate' instead of postulate. Additionally, some phrases are awkward or unnatural, such as 'in account of both economically and culturally'. Because the vocabulary is adequate to convey meaning despite these errors, a Band 6 score is awarded.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.5
The writer attempts a mix of simple and complex sentence forms, utilizing relative clauses and introductory dependent clauses. However, there are frequent grammatical and punctuation errors throughout the text. Examples include lowercase beginnings for sentences ('this essay will scrutinize...'), missing articles ('visiting to cinemas', 'involes high cost'), subject-verb agreement issues ('both the perspectives has', 'many platform like... offers'), and awkward punctuation like unnecessary spaces. While these errors do not completely impede communication, they occur regularly and prevent the grammar from reaching Band 7.
