Student answer (Band 6.0)

In this digital age, the medium of entertainment has changed dramatically over the years. Some people think that theatres are important from both economical and cultural significance, others argue that online entertainment mediums have seemingly weakened the theaters and cinema halls, hence they are not longer needed. While online platforms are a powerful and alternative medium for entertainment, I belive they can't eliminate the role of theatres and cinemas in todays rapidly changing world..

On the one hand, online streaming platforms have emerged as a key player in the entertainment world. It offers different variety of contents from across the world, an ideal place for both the commercial and independent filmmakers to showcase their contents to the audience directly. These platforms allow audience to experience a content at a very cheap cost and can be available 24/7 with just an internet connection. These platforms are mostly suitable for their in-built marketing strategy and their individual promotional campaigns which save a lot of money and resources from both the ends. For example, Netflix and Amazon Prime offer the audience to enjoy their contents based on interest and affordability.

On the other hand hand, cinema halls now-a-days are built to experience a cinema from different perspectives. Big budget cinemas are released worldwide on specially built IMAX cinema halls and they give surprising live experience, making the cinema more realistic and can touch the audience instantly. This platform acts a medium between the actors and audience to have a chitchat after the show ends. There involve many stakeholders in this business who benefit form the profit and this becomes a source of employment to many people. Cinema halls are also perfect place for family gathering on special holidays. This increases the social connectivity and acts a relaxant to the busy city life. For example, a Shakib Khan film relased on a Eid day gives the audience a chance to go and spend a quality time with the family and meet familiar persons. Furthermore, theatres nurture, train and create actors who later become renowned with their perfection, which particularly comes from that artistic stages. There still is a specific group of audience who are profoundly adore theatres shows and the actors and associated persons live on that medium. For example, a theatre stage acts a employment and training ground for the actors and gives them the needed platform.

In conclusion, although streaming platforms deliver a quick and affordable way of entertainment, it can't replace the theatres and cinema halls completely. Theatres and cinema halls are culturally interconnected with the audience due to their grand atmospheres and artistic way of experiences and a way to social connectivity.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 6.5

The response addresses all parts of the task by discussing both the decline of theatres due to online entertainment and their continuing economic and cultural importance, while also providing a clear personal opinion in the introduction and conclusion. The ideas are generally well developed with relevant examples, such as mentioning Netflix and Amazon Prime for streaming and local cultural events like Shakib Khan films on Eid days. However, there is some minor repetition in the body paragraphs regarding the employment and training aspects of theatre, and some arguments tend to overgeneralise slightly. Overall, the task is covered thoroughly enough to meet the Band 7 requirements, showing a clear position throughout and extending main ideas.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.5

The essay is clearly organised into four distinct paragraphs with a logical overall progression from introduction to body arguments and a conclusion. Cohesive devices are used to signal shifts between perspectives, such as 'On the one hand' and 'On the other hand hand'. Paragraphing is used sufficiently and appropriately, separating the digital streaming arguments from the physical theatre and cinema discussions. However, referencing and cohesion are occasionally mechanical or slightly faulty, as seen with minor referencing slips like 'a content' and occasional clunky transitions. Logical flow is generally well maintained, placing the response solidly within the Band 7 criteria.

Lexical Resource: Band 5.5

The writer demonstrates a sufficient range of vocabulary for the task with some attempts at less common and topic-specific items, such as 'independent filmmakers', 'stakeholders', 'social connectivity', and 'artistic stages'. There is an adequate range for clear communication; however, there are noticeable word choice and collocation inaccuracies throughout the text, such as 'economical significance' instead of 'economic significance', 'online entertainment mediums', 'experience a content', and 'profoundly adore theatres shows'. Spelling is generally good, but some lexical slips prevent the response from achieving a higher band. The vocabulary used is flexible enough to convey precise meaning despite the occasional error.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.5

The writer uses a mix of simple and complex sentence forms, demonstrating a willingness to construct multi-clause sentences such as conditional and concessive structures ('While online platforms are a powerful and alternative medium...'). There is good control of punctuation and a frequent number of error-free sentences. However, several grammatical errors and awkward structures persist throughout the essay, including 'theaters are not longer needed', 'I belive', 'It offers different variety of contents' (subject-verb agreement and article error), 'There involve many stakeholders', and 'relased' (spelling/morphology). These errors do not impede communication, placing the grammatical performance securely at Band 6.
