Student answer (Band 6.0)
Some people think that in this modern age, theatres and cinemas are not good for future generations because they are just a waste of time, while other people think that theatres and cinemas are the only ways to get enjoyment in their stressful lives. This essay will discuss both views and explain why theatres and cinemas are no longer important, as people can watch all the entertainment they want online, as well as why theatres and cinemas are still important both economically and culturally.
On the one hand, people in the modern era think that there are many online platforms that are enough to provide entertainment. However, they prefer not to watch movies in theatres and cinemas because people nowadays tend to focus on their studies and careers to make their lives convenient and when they become parents they help their children develop skills and gain knowledge.
On the other hand, adults think theatres and cinemas are the only ways to get information about the economy and culture because there are many experienced directors who have various types of experience and they share their experience with the modern generation through their movies.
In conclusion, some people prefer not to watch movies in theatres and cinemas because people nowadays tend to focus on their studies and careers to improve their lives, and when they become parents, they help their children develop skills and gain knowledge. However, adults think that theatres and cinemas are the only ways to get information about the economy and culture. In my opinion, although online platforms provide convenient entertainment, theatres and cinemas are still important because they provide valuable cultural experiences and entertainment.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 6.0
The response addresses all parts of the prompt by discussing both views—that online platforms render theatres and cinemas obsolete, and that cinemas and theatres remain economically and culturally important—while also providing a clear personal opinion in the conclusion. However, the development of ideas lacks depth and relies heavily on generalisations or slightly repetitive assertions, such as the focus on careers and parenting in both body paragraph one and the conclusion. While the main aspects of the task are covered, the arguments would benefit from concrete examples or further extension. Therefore, the response aligns best with the Band 6 descriptors for Task Achievement.
Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.0
The essay displays a clear overall structure with a recognizable introduction, distinct body paragraphs, and a concluding summary. Cohesive devices such as 'On the one hand', 'On the other hand', and 'In conclusion' are used to signal the progression of ideas. However, paragraphing and referencing feel somewhat mechanical and repetitive, particularly with the extensive re-stating of the opposing view in the conclusion. Progression is visible, but the flow is occasionally hindered by heavy repetition and limited variety in cohesive ties. These characteristics place the response firmly at Band 6.
Lexical Resource: Band 6.0
The student uses an adequate range of vocabulary for the task, successfully communicating ideas about the digital age, entertainment, and cultural experiences. Words and phrases such as 'modern era', 'stressful lives', and 'valuable cultural experiences' demonstrate a sufficient lexical resource. However, there is limited use of less common or sophisticated vocabulary, and some phrases border on repetitive or overly simplistic (e.g., 'good for future generations', 'get entertainment'). Occasional minor word choice and collocation inaccuracies are present, but they do not impede communication, matching the Band 6 profile.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 6.0
The response exhibits a mix of simple and complex sentence forms. The student attempts longer, multi-clause sentences, such as the opening sentence of the essay and the concluding statement. There are some grammatical errors and awkward phrasing—for instance, 'adults think theatres and cinemas are the only ways to get information' which is an over-generalisation and slightly unnatural in collocation. Nevertheless, punctuation and grammar control are generally sufficient for the meaning to be clear throughout, with errors rarely impeding comprehension. This fits well within the Band 6 criteria.
