Student answer (Band 6.0)

In the age of technology, some people argue that theatres and cinemas have no significant role anymore as the people can watch everything in different online streaming websites. Whereas, others claiming that both are still vital in society and economic growth. This essay will talk about how it is still important to have theatres and cinema.

Firstly, the individual experience of watching cinemas and theatres can't be achieve in watching television at home. The big screen, laughing together in cinemas and the live visual of theatres are the best to experience. Subsequently, cinemas and theatres represent culturally in the way that it shares common interest to people and common experience since the individual can relate to each other.

Secondly, the sales of theatres and cinemas are contributing to the socio economic growth of one country. Whereas it also support actors and actresses in theatres and gives higher salary than streaming platform. It also encourage people to go out and have bonding with family and friends.

On the other hand, streaming platforms also have some advantages. People don't need to go out just to watch in cinemas or theatre, they can watch it comfortable in their houses. Most of the streaming platforms also give discount on membership whilst people can watch tons of movies anytime they like.

All of the things have advantages and drawbacks, but theatres and cinemas are still clearly important. No other things can beat the experience of going out, watching cinemas and theatre while enjoying it together with people.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 6.0

The student addresses all parts of the task by discussing both the decline of theatres and cinemas due to online streaming and their ongoing cultural and economic importance, while also providing a clear personal opinion in the introduction and conclusion. However, the development of ideas remains somewhat superficial. For example, the point about economic growth is brief and lacks specific details or examples, mentioning only that it gives a higher salary than streaming platforms. Similarly, cultural representation is stated rather than fully explored. This places the response comfortably at Band 6, as all parts of the prompt are addressed with relevant ideas, but some points are under-developed.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.0

The essay displays a coherent overall arrangement with a clear paragraph structure, using sequential markers such as 'Firstly', 'Secondly', and 'On the other hand'. However, cohesion is at times mechanical or faulty. In the introduction, the transition 'Whereas, others claiming...' creates a fragment rather than a complete dependent clause. Referencing can also be unclear, as seen in the phrase 'the sales of theatres and cinemas are contributing to the socio economic growth of one country. Whereas it also support actors...', where the use of 'whereas' as a sentence starter is grammatically inaccurate and disrupts logical progression. Paragraphing is used sufficiently to separate main points, but logical links between sentences occasionally falter, leading to a Band 6 score.

Lexical Resource: Band 6.0

The student uses an adequate range of vocabulary for the task, successfully incorporating terms such as 'digital age', 'streaming websites', 'socio economic growth', and 'advantages and drawbacks'. However, there are noticeable word choice and collocation inaccuracies throughout the text. For instance, the student writes 'watching cinemas' instead of 'going to the cinema', 'live visual of theatres', and 'watch it comfortable in their houses' instead of 'comfortably'. Furthermore, 'others claiming' in the introduction lacks a auxiliary verb. These vocabulary errors are frequent enough to prevent the response from reaching Band 7, but they do not impede overall communication, fitting the Band 6 descriptor well.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.0

The response contains a mix of simple and complex sentence structures, such as concessive clauses ('Although/Whilst...'). However, grammatical accuracy is inconsistent. There are several noticeable errors, including subject-verb agreement issues ('as the people can watch', 'it also support actors'), preposition errors ('watching in cinemas'), and fragment sentences. For example, 'Whereas, others claiming that both are still vital...' is a dependent clause treated as a main sentence. Another error occurs with pluralisation and articles, such as 'can't be achieve in watching television'. Because simple structures are generally controlled well, but attempts at complex grammar introduce frequent errors, the grammar score is Band 5.0.
