Student answer (Band 6.5)

The rapid development of digital technology has changed the way people consume entertainment. While some people believe that theatre and cinemas are becoming unnecessary because all form of entertainment are available online, others argue that these venue continue to have economic benefit and cultural values. In this essay we will discuss both views before delivering my opinion.

On the one hand, there are several online platforms available like Netflix and Amazon prime which allows users to watch all forms of entertainment online wherever and whenever they want. This is particularly convenient for people with busy lifestyle because they do not need to travel or follow a fixed timeline. Moreover, online streaming applications have a wide variety of content as per the user taste and preference at a competitive price. For instance, people can watch hundreds of movie and Tv shows in a single subscription.

On the other hand, Cinemas and theatres offers different experiences which cannot be replaced by online streaming platforms. First of all, going to cinema provides larger screen, high-quality sound effect and a shared experience with the audience. Similarly, live theatre allows audience to enjoy watching actors performing directly on the stage, creating a stronger connection between performs and spectators. Furthermore, these venues also contribute to the economy by employing actors, directors, managers and other contributing staff. Lastly, live theatres have a strong cultural values by preserving traditional forms of entertainments.

To conclude, in my view digital entertainment will continues to grow in the future by it does not means that cinemas and theatre are irrelevant. They provide unique experience and online streaming having their own benefits.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 6.5

The response addresses all parts of the prompt well. You discuss the view that theatres and cinemas are no longer important due to online entertainment, present the counter-argument regarding their economic and cultural significance, and clearly state your own opinion in both the introduction and conclusion. The ideas are relevant and supported with examples such as Netflix, Amazon Prime, and live stage performances. While the development in the main body paragraphs could be slightly more extended to reach the highest bands, the coverage is comprehensive enough to satisfy Band 7 criteria. Your position remains clear throughout the essay.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.5

The essay is logically organised with a clear introduction, two distinct body paragraphs representing opposing views, and a concluding paragraph. Paragraphing is used appropriately to separate ideas. Cohesive devices such as 'On the one hand', 'On the other hand', 'Moreover', and 'Furthermore' help guide the reader through the text successfully. Referencing is generally clear, though minor improvements could be made to transition sentences more smoothly. Overall, the progression of ideas is easy to follow, aligning well with the Band 7 descriptors.

Lexical Resource: Band 6.0

You demonstrate a sufficient range of vocabulary to allow some flexibility and precision, using topic-specific terms like 'digital technology', 'online streaming applications', 'competitive price', and 'traditional forms of entertainments'. However, there are some noticeable lexical errors and inaccuracies in word choice and pluralisation, such as 'all form of entertainment' instead of 'all forms of entertainment', 'these venue' instead of 'these venues', and 'performing directly on the stage, creating a stronger connection between performs' instead of 'performers'. These minor inaccuracies prevent the essay from reaching a higher band, but the vocabulary is adequate for clear communication.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 6.0

The essay contains a mix of simple and complex sentence structures, such as relative clauses ('which allows users to watch...') and conditional ideas. However, there are several grammatical and punctuation errors throughout the text, including subject-verb agreement issues ('Cinemas and theatres offers', 'digital entertainment will continues', 'online streaming having their own benefits') and missing articles. Additionally, the final sentence of your conclusion contains a run-on error ('in my view digital entertainment will continues to grow in the future by it does not means that cinemas and theatre are irrelevant'). These errors occasionally interrupt the flow but do not impede overall communication.
