Student answer (Band 6.0)

In the current societal landscape, performing arts and technology is a phenomenon that is commonly addressed among diverse population. Some people believe that they can watch all sorts of entertainment programs online. While others argue that theatres and cinemas are essential socially and financially. In my perspective, I support the latter proposition as it holds potential benefits.

Examining the brighter side of theatres and cinemas, the foremost one is that they play crucial role in our industry. Different forms of art including movie theatres, plays, exhibitions, and cinemas are a major source of capital in our country. Huge budgets and increments are allocated each year for the entertainment industry. For instance, the release of a bollywood movie 'Bajrangi Bhaijan' came out to be a blockbuster film of the year because it highlighted an important issue between Pakistan and India. Therefore, audience from both countries enjoyed it in cimenas. Consequently, with the love from nation and efforts of workers, the industry earned a great revenue and grew internationally.

Furthermore, the other reaso n to prove my point is that theatres and cinemas are significant way of social gatherings. In the modern world, most of the youth prefer to stay indoor. In this way, they become isolated and deprived of social connections. Thus, cinemas and theatres can be an ideal place of hanging out with one another. To illustrate, teenage boys and girls plans to watch latest movies in the cinema and make the spend the most precious moments of their life with their friends there.

On the contrary, some people counter claim the mentioned support. The foremost argument they do is to watch all the latest movies online. To add to this, they prefer to stay at home, sit at their sofas and watch all programs at their own pace. It is undoubtedly one of the most positive advancements of technology. People can have access to all the entertainment programs at their homes. Hence, it saves their time and money for purchasing the tickets for cinemas. So, they also have some quality time at home without being tensed for a makeover for going somewhere. But, it can make them socially inacitve. Thus, they will be less confident in social gatherings.

To conclude the discussion, it can be said that despite the fact of saving time and money, my reasons that theatres and cinemas are essential for a healthy environment and economic stability are logically acceptable.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 6.5

The response addresses all parts of the task by discussing both views—the rise of online entertainment versus the enduring economic and cultural importance of physical cinemas and theatres—and provides a clear personal opinion in the introduction and conclusion. Ideas are generally well-extended, such as the example of the film 'Bajrangi Bhaijaan' illustrating economic benefits, and the discussion on social interactions among youth. However, some arguments tend to over-generalise or remain slightly under-developed, particularly regarding cultural significance which is touched upon briefly rather than deeply explored. The position is maintained throughout, fitting the Band 7 criteria well.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.0

The essay displays a clear logical organisation and progression throughout. Each paragraph has a distinct focus: introduction, economic benefits, social benefits, opposing views, and conclusion. Cohesive devices are used to guide the reader, such as 'Furthermore', 'To illustrate', and 'On the contrary', though some transitional phrases feel slightly mechanical or formulaic ('the other reaso n to prove my point', 'The foremost argument they do'). Paragraphing is used appropriately and effectively separates the main themes of the essay. Referencing is generally clear, though minor cohesion slips occur.

Lexical Resource: Band 5.5

The student uses an adequate range of vocabulary for the task, successfully attempting less common items such as 'societal landscape', 'phenomenon', 'blockbuster', and 'socially inactive'. However, there are noticeable word choice and collocation inaccuracies throughout the text, such as 'performing arts and technology is a phenomenon', 'play crucial role' (missing article), 'release of a bollywood movie... came out to be', and 'tensed for a makeover'. Despite these errors, communication is not impeded, and the vocabulary remains sufficient for a Band 6 score.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.5

The response demonstrates a mix of simple and complex sentence forms, utilizing conditionals, relative clauses, and introductory participial phrases ('Examining the brighter side of theatres...'). There are frequent error-free sentences, but also a number of persistent grammatical errors, such as subject-verb agreement issues ('performing arts and technology is'), missing prepositions or articles ('a crucial role', 'in cimenas'), typographical errors ('reaso n', 'inacitve'), and awkward phrasing ('teenage boys and girls plans'). Control of punctuation is generally good, but the grammatical inaccuracies place this firmly in the Band 6 category.
