IELTS Writing Task 2 question

Some people say that in the digital age, theatres and cinemas are no longer important as people can watch all the entertainment they want online. Others argue that theatres and cinemas are still important both economically and culturally.

Discuss both these views and give your own opinion.

Give reasons for your answer and include any relevant examples from your own knowledge or experience.

Student answer (Band 6.0)

A portion of population believes that public theatres and cinemas are not relevant anymore as the internet offers the same function with more convience. On the other hand, the another part counter that by highlighting economic and cultural impact of cinemas. The following essay will explore both views with author's opinion at the end.

According to one group, the internet has revolutionized by providing convenience and affordability. Nowdays entertainment can be enjoyed anytime and anywhere using personal devices. For instance, a working man can enjoy a film during his commute home, save both time and effort compared to visiting a cinema. In addition, the increasing availability of online streaming services has driven cost down, further increasing accesibility.

On the other side, another group argue that the economic and cultural impact of cinema is too significant to ignore. The traffic generated by cinema often not only benifits the theatre itself, but also surrounding businesses. For example, before and after movie in the city there are various cafes and hotels where people can eat and enjoy meal with beautiful view of city, instead of staying home and eating home-cooked food. Moreover, the cultural surrounding the traditional theatres is too valuable to sacrifice, as cinema often provide a higher-quality experience as compared to private entertaiment.

In conclusion, online streaming services have increased access to entertaiment, but it is unfair to say the traditional theatrs will bw fully replaced by them due to the cultural and economical value they bring. In my opinion the conventional cinema will continue to remain relevant, even with the presence of personal entertainment.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 6.5

The response addresses all parts of the task by discussing both views—that cinemas are obsolete due to online streaming, and that they remain economically and culturally important—while also providing a clear personal opinion in the introduction and conclusion. Ideas are relevant and supported with explanations and examples, such as the convenience of watching films during a commute and the economic synergy between cinemas and surrounding businesses. However, some arguments lack deeper extension; for instance, the cultural significance is touched upon but could be further elaborated with specific examples. Overall, the prompt requirements are fully met, earning a solid Band 7.0 for Task Achievement.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.5

The essay displays a clear logical organisation and progression throughout. It follows a traditional four-paragraph structure with an introduction, two body paragraphs representing opposing views, and a conclusion. Cohesive devices such as 'On the other hand', 'In addition', and 'Moreover' are used effectively to signal transitions between ideas, though referencing is occasionally slightly loose, as seen in 'the another part counter that'. Paragraphing is used appropriately to separate distinct arguments. While cohesion is generally clear and effective, minor mechanical elements prevent it from reaching the higher bands, resulting in a Band 7.0.

Lexical Resource: Band 5.5

The student demonstrates a sufficient range of vocabulary to allow for some flexibility and precision, employing terms like 'revolutionized', 'affordability', 'synergy', and 'conventional'. Less common lexical items are attempted, such as 'accessibility' and 'significance', though there are occasional spelling and word-choice errors, including 'convience' instead of 'convenience', 'Nowdays' instead of 'Nowadays', and 'accesibility'. Furthermore, phrases like 'the cultural surrounding' contain grammatical inaccuracies in word formation. Despite these occasional slips, the vocabulary is adequate for the task and communication is never impeded, placing it securely at Band 6.0.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.5

The writer uses a mix of simple and complex sentence forms, demonstrating the ability to construct conditional and relative clauses, such as 'while the internet offers the same function with more convenience' and 'where people can eat and enjoy meal with beautiful view of city'. However, there are several grammatical errors scattered throughout the text, including missing articles ('with beautiful view of city', 'before and after movie'), subject-verb agreement issues ('the another part counter', 'traffic generated by cinema often not only benifits'), and punctuation slips. These errors do not impede communication, but their frequency prevents the grammar score from reaching Band 7.0. Therefore, a Band 6.0 is appropriate.
