Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 5.5

The response addresses both parts of the prompt, discussing the view that theatres are no longer important due to online entertainment, alongside the counter-argument regarding their cultural and economic value. The student also provides a personal opinion in the conclusion. However, the development of ideas is somewhat limited and repetitive. For example, in the second paragraph, the point regarding online apps is reiterated without much extension. While a clear position is established, the arguments lack depth and rely on simple generalizations. This level of task response aligns best with Band 5.5, as it addresses the prompt partially with limited and under-developed ideas.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 5.0

The essay is organised into four paragraphs with a clear introduction, two body paragraphs, and a conclusion, which provides an overall structure. However, paragraphing mechanics and punctuation are frequently faulty, such as comma splices ('...home, On the other hand...', '...conclusion,the best way...'). Cohesive devices are used mechanically and sometimes inaccurately, such as 'Thats, why' and repetitive sentence openings like 'On the one hand' and 'On the other hand'. Furthermore, progression is sometimes obscured by abrupt transitions and a lack of smooth referencing between sentences. These features place the response firmly at Band 5.0 for Coherence and Cohesion.

Lexical Resource: Band 5.0

The vocabulary used is basic and repetitive, featuring frequent word choice and collocation errors. For instance, the student writes 'eliminate our specific time' instead of 'allocate time', and refers to entertainment material as 'stuff'. There are also lexical inaccuracies such as 'tradionally' (traditionally), 'peoples' (people), and 'heavy sound base system'. The range of vocabulary is limited to everyday terms with very few less common items attempted accurately. This performance is characteristic of Band 5.0, where lexical resource is restricted and noticeable errors cause occasional difficulty for the reader.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.0

The essay displays a very limited range of grammatical structures, relying heavily on simple sentences and faulty attempts at complex forms. There are frequent punctuation errors, particularly missing spaces after commas and periods, as well as capitalisation issues in the middle of sentences (e.g., 'Thats, why', 'On the other hand,In'). Grammatical errors are widespread, including subject-verb agreement issues like 'numerous apps has been developed' and tense inconsistencies. These frequent errors cause strain for the reader and reflect the descriptor for Band 4.5, which rounds to a 5.0 based on the closest whole/half band criteria constraints.
