IELTS Writing Task 2 question

Some people say that in the digital age, theatres and cinemas are no longer important as people can watch all the entertainment they want online. Others argue that theatres and cinemas are still important both economically and culturally.

Discuss both these views and give your own opinion.

Give reasons for your answer and include any relevant examples from your own knowledge or experience.

Student answer (Band 6.0)

Theatres and cinemas have become a topic of argument for people in the present world because of the innovations of digital televisions and apps. People who are less likely to socialize and take time out to go to a theatre or a cinema prefer watching entertainment online. In contrast, people who love big screens and watching shows with public applause prefer going to theatres and cinemas.

To begin with, amusement on screen had started long ago from theatres and cinemas; people who love entertainment never miss a chance to visit these places. Theatres and cinemas continue a cultural legacy, and they are economically significant as well. These entertainment houses provide a chance to spend time with your favourite people and discuss your points of view about the show with them. However, it is very difficult to make time for it from a busy routine. For instance, I always end up delaying my plan to go to theatre because of my busy schedule.

In contrast, the world has shifted to a digital life now, and people like me find watching shows online way more convenient than going to a cinema. Therefore, individuals have become used to the easy way of amusement online. However, one of the major drawbacks of digital entertainment is that people are less likely to share their emotions with others.

To conclude, theatres and cinemas can never lose their cultural importance because of history. However, online amusement also plays a significant role in entertaining individuals with a variety of content.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 6.0

The response addresses all parts of the task by discussing both views—the decline of theatres in the digital age versus their ongoing economic and cultural significance—and implicitly provides an opinion. However, the development of ideas is somewhat limited and lacks depth. For instance, the discussion on economic and cultural significance in the second paragraph remains quite general ('Theatres and cinemas continue a cultural legacy, and they are economically significant as well') without sufficient elaboration or concrete examples. Furthermore, the personal anecdote provided ('I always end up delaying my plan to go to theatre because of my busy schedule') does not strongly support the broader societal arguments requested in an academic task. While the position is clear, the arguments would benefit from greater extension and robust supporting evidence to reach a higher band.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.0

The essay presents a clear overall progression, moving logically from an introduction to body paragraphs discussing both perspectives and concluding with a summary. Paragraphing is used appropriately to separate distinct ideas, such as the cultural arguments in paragraph two and the digital shift in paragraph three. However, cohesive devices are at times basic or slightly mechanical, relying heavily on transitional phrases like 'To begin with,' 'In contrast,' and 'To conclude.' Additionally, referencing is occasionally imprecise, such as in the concluding paragraph where 'because of history' lacks a clear referent. Despite these minor cohesive flaws, the logical flow is maintained throughout the text.

Lexical Resource: Band 6.0

The student uses an adequate range of vocabulary for the task, successfully incorporating terms such as 'innovations,' 'legacy,' 'economically significant,' and 'convenient.' There are some attempts to use less common vocabulary, but word choice and collocation are occasionally awkward, such as 'amusement on screen' instead of 'screen entertainment' or 'filmic entertainment.' Spelling and word formation are generally accurate, and errors do not impede communication. However, the recurrence of simpler lexical choices ('easy way of amusement,' 'busy routine') restricts the lexical range to a solid Band 6 level.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 6.0

The response demonstrates a mix of simple and complex sentence structures, using subordinating conjunctions like 'because of' and 'while.' There is generally good control over basic sentence grammar, and punctuation is handled adequately. However, grammatical errors and awkward phrasing surface occasionally, such as omitting the article in 'go to theatre' and slight issues with preposition usage. Complex structures tend to be somewhat repetitive rather than varied, and minor structural slips prevent the essay from achieving a higher band. Nevertheless, meaning remains clear throughout, and communication is never impeded by these grammatical limitations.
