Some people say that in the digital age, theatres and cinemas are no longer important as people can watch all the entertainment they want online. Others argue that theatres and cinemas are still important both economically and culturally.
Discuss both these views and give your own opinion.
Give reasons for your answer and include any relevant examples from your own knowledge or experience.
Student answer (Band 5.5)
While it is argued by most that cinemas and theaters have lost their importance in this technologically advanced day and age, others are of opinion that they both bring huge value in economy and culture of the society. In my opinion, as much I enjoy experiencing theater and cinema, I cannot emphasize the time and money I save by watching movies online.
Examining the brighter side of digital age, online entertainment not only provides comfort of home but it also helps in bridging the gap between different regions and ethnicities. Digital platform have thousands of shows and movies with subtitles in different languages that helps people with different languages to connect and learn about other cultures. For instance, South Korean movies and shows have gained significant popularity among foreigners with the availability of platforms like Netflix and Amazon prime video.
On the contrary, there are some drawbacks when shifting to digital platforms both economically and culturally. As the number of theaters are decreasing, the true essence of plays such as those of Shakespears' is losing among the coming generations. Furhtermore, the film prodcuers have to bear the financial burden of films that underperform in cinemas, which consequently discourages them. Theaters and cinema play a pivotal role in socialization.
In conclusion i would argue that even though adaptation of digital entertainment brings lonliness or social distancing, it gives leverage to people to spend more time with their families and connect better with the world.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 5.5
The response addresses all parts of the prompt by discussing both views on the digital age versus physical theatres and cinemas, and provides a clear personal opinion in the introduction and conclusion. However, the student's text contains 243 words, which fails to meet the minimum requirement of 250 words. This under-length issue prevents the ideas from being fully developed, particularly in the final body paragraph and the conclusion. For instance, the point regarding socialization is left as a single dangling sentence, and the counter-arguments are somewhat rushed. Because the length requirement was not met, a penalty must be applied to Task Achievement, pulling the score down to a 5.5 despite the otherwise relevant and clear ideas presented.
Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.0
The essay presents a clear overall arrangement with a logical progression of ideas from the introduction, through the opposing views in the body paragraphs, to a final conclusion. Paragraphing is used appropriately to separate the different aspects of the prompt. Cohesive devices are employed to link ideas, such as "While it is argued", "Examining the brighter side", and "On the contrary". However, there are minor cohesion and referencing flaws, such as the incomplete linkage in the final sentence ("In conclusion i would argue that even though...") and slight mechanical repetition in transitions. Nevertheless, the progression of information remains easy to follow throughout.
Lexical Resource: Band 5.5
The student demonstrates an adequate and flexible range of vocabulary for the task, successfully attempting less common items such as "technologically advanced day and age", "bridging the gap", "significant popularity", and "financial burden". However, there are noticeable word-choice and spelling errors that prevent a higher band, including "others are of opinion" (missing article), "Digital platform have" (subject-verb agreement), "Shakespears'" (spelling and apostrophe placement), and "Furhtermore" and "prodcuers" (typographical/spelling errors). Despite these slips, communication is never impeded, and the vocabulary is sufficiently varied to sustain the reader's interest.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.5
The writer uses a mix of simple and complex sentence structures, incorporating subordinate clauses effectively (e.g., "While it is argued by most that cinemas and theaters have lost their importance..."). There is good control over tense usage in most parts of the essay. However, frequent grammatical and punctuation errors occur, such as capitalization issues ("i" instead of "I"), missing articles ("in economy and culture"), and agreement errors ("Digital platform have"). Complex structures are attempted with varying degrees of success, and punctuation is occasionally neglected in compound-complex sentences. These errors reflect a Band 6 level where a mix of structures exists alongside recurring inaccuracies.
