Some people say that in the digital age, theatres and cinemas are no longer important as people can watch all the entertainment they want online. Others argue that theatres and cinemas are still important both economically and culturally.

Discuss both these views and give your own opinion.

Give reasons for your answer and include any relevant examples from your own knowledge or experience.

Student answer (Band 6.5)

Art was always intended to be a communal experience. Some individuals believe that the importance of theatres and cinemas diminished with the advancement of digital technology, while other argue that the visual arts is both cultural and economic relavent. While I understand why some people support the former view, I am still in favor towards the latter.

With inflation in economy theatres and cinemas no longer function as the cheapest source of entertainment, which is one of the direct causes for people to look for other forms of experiences in their free time. Online websites are offering them similar content with nominal subscription fees, making it the most easiest choice. Moreover, people are no longer able to manage their busy schedules with not enough free time for traveling to the theatres, especially for low income families it is a burden to spend a lot on a three hour movie. For instance, during the global pandemic people choose to watch shows on netlfix more than going to a theatre because it is not only cheaper but also a safer option.

However, theatres and cinemas are significant not only for economic reasons but also the wide cultural social impacts it has on the society. Some widely renowed films create indentity to the language and culture it showcases internationally. Although it became a costly entertainment than before, a good cinema still unites people from different social and economic backgrounds to experience the film together. Furthermore, the globalisation of film business helps boost country's economy and brings exposure to the beautiful locations which can improve tourism. For example, lord of the rings films boosted the travel and tourism in New Zealand from 15 to 85% since the film release.

By establishing the culture and traditional aspects, films work as a time capsule to the younger generations to learn and understand their own long standing cultural values through entertainment, which gives them better understanding of their national identity. As a result, cinemas and theatres play an important role in preserving culture and values to future generations.

In conclusion, busy life and growing expenses does make cinema and theatres less relavent innpresent digital age. nevertheless, theatres and cinemas still remain significantly important because of their economic and cultural contribution to the society in my opinion.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 6.5

The student addresses all parts of the task by discussing both the decline of theatres and cinemas due to online platforms and their ongoing economic and cultural importance. A clear position is stated in the introduction and maintained throughout the essay. Main ideas are supported with relevant examples, such as the mention of Netflix during the pandemic and the impact of the Lord of the Rings films in New Zealand. While some of the economic points are slightly generalised, the development is sufficient for a Band 7 level, as all requirements of the prompt are well-covered with a clear, overarching viewpoint.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.5

The essay is logically organised with a clear introduction, body paragraphs addressing each viewpoint, and a conclusion. Paragraphing is used appropriately to separate distinct themes, such as the reasons for decline versus the enduring cultural value. Cohesive devices are employed adequately (e.g., 'Moreover', 'However', 'Furthermore'), though there are occasional mechanical transitions or minor referencing issues. Overall progression is clear throughout the text, meeting the expectations of a Band 7 descriptor.

Lexical Resource: Band 6.0

The student demonstrates an adequate to sufficient range of vocabulary suitable for the task, attempting less common items such as 'communal experience', 'globalisation', and 'time capsule'. However, there are some noticeable lexical and collocational errors, such as 'visual arts is both cultural and economic relavent' (should be relevant), 'most easiest' (double superlative), and spelling slips like 'renowed' (renowned), 'netlfix', and 'innpresent'. These errors do not impede communication, placing the response firmly at Band 6.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 6.0

The writer uses a mix of simple and complex sentence structures, including conditional and relative clauses (e.g., 'While I understand why some people support the former view...'). There are frequent error-free sentences, but also a number of grammatical errors and awkward phrasing, such as 'Art was always intended' (has always been intended), 'other argue' (others argue), and 'becoming a costly entertainment than before' (more costly than before). Punctuation is generally acceptable, supporting clear communication of ideas.
