Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 5.0
The response attempts to discuss both views regarding the importance of theatres and cinemas versus digital entertainment, and offers a personal opinion, thus addressing the main task. However, the development of ideas is limited and repetitive, with frequent tangents regarding social media and internet access rather than focusing specifically on theatres, cinemas, and their economic and cultural roles. The student's position is discernible, stating that digital entertainment is preferred, but the arguments lack depth and clear supporting examples from knowledge or experience. The response fits the Band 5 descriptor because it addresses the task only partially and ideas remain under-developed.
Coherence and Cohesion: Band 5.0
The essay displays some organizational structure with an introduction, body paragraphs, and a brief conclusion, but it lacks clear overall progression. Paragraphing is attempted, but paragraph boundaries and internal flow are disrupted by repetitive ideas and abrupt transitions, such as starting paragraphs with 'Consequently' or 'In my opinion' in a way that does not logically follow. Cohesive devices are used, but they are frequently inaccurate or repetitive (e.g., 'Therefore', 'Furthermore'). Referencing is also at times unclear, making it difficult for the reader to follow the train of thought. This aligns with Band 5, where there is some organization but no clear overall progression and inadequate or repetitive cohesion.
Lexical Resource: Band 5.0
The vocabulary used is limited and repetitive, relying heavily on basic terms like 'entertainment', 'digital media', and 'social media'. There are numerous noticeable lexical and word-choice errors, such as 'becuase', 'oppurtunities', 'gave' instead of 'given', and awkward phrases like 'changes their route to watch it online'. These errors and the restricted vocabulary range cause some difficulty for the reader and prevent the text from achieving a higher score. It fits the Band 5 descriptor, reflecting a limited but minimally adequate range with noticeable errors that affect clarity.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 4.0
The text contains a very limited range of grammatical structures, and attempts at complex sentences are frequently faulty or ungrammatical, such as 'The individual say that thing the theatres and cinemas no longer crucial' and 'The people want to being relax'. There are frequent errors in subject-verb agreement, tense consistency, prepositions, and article usage (e.g., 'go theatres', 'the social media can effect the human's mind'). These frequent errors cause strain and difficulty for the reader, placing the grammar performance firmly at Band 4.0, as the errors are pervasive and significantly impede effective communication.
