Student answer (Band 5.0)

In the digital age, the theaters and cinemas are no longer needed as people can watch and enjoy all the entertainment they want online. But there are some people that argue that theaters a d cinemas are still important both economically and culturally. Both type of people are correct in their point of view, because such that think there is no longer need of theaters and cinemas have the facility like good internet connection and a big LCD or such facility where they can watch entertainment. On the other hand such people that do not have any facility of internet, and even a smart phone how they can watch the entertainment and enjoy themselves.

In my opinion there is no longer need for the theaters and cinemas. Now everyone from every place can watch the entertainment or anything he wants to watch at any time of the day can watch easily. Now the world has become global village and we can enjoy with any entertainment from anywhere, so why do we need to invest in theaters and cinemas.

Such people that think theater and cinemas are still important economically and culturally should leave it and adopt the advance technology. They should take advantage of technology and enjoy the entertainment with their families and friends at their desired places.

I personally observe that the theaters and cinemas are now closed in even big cities also and they are just like old buildings. In this busy world people do not have time to walk even so how they can visit the theaters and cinemas now.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 5.0

The response addresses the prompt by discussing both views—that cinemas are obsolete and that they remain economically and culturally important—and provides a clear personal opinion. However, the development of ideas is somewhat limited and repetitive. For instance, the counter-argument regarding internet access and smart phones is simplistic and lacks depth. The argument that people 'do not have time to walk even' is a weak and unsupported generalisation. While the writer covers all parts of the task as required by Band 5 and Band 6 descriptors, the arguments lack sophisticated extension and rely on basic assertions. Therefore, the response aligns best with Band 5 due to the limited and under-developed nature of the ideas presented.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 5.0

The essay is divided into four paragraphs, which provides a basic visual structure, but the internal organisation and progression of ideas are frequently faulty. Cohesive devices are either missing, inadequate, or repetitive, as seen in the excessive reliance on connectors like 'Now' at the start of sentences. Furthermore, referencing is often unclear; expressions such as 'Both type of people' and 'Such people that think' are awkward and impede smooth transitions between sentences. Paragraphing is used, but the grouping of ideas lacks clear logical progression, particularly in the third paragraph which abruptly dismisses opposing views without adequate transitional support. These features are characteristic of a Band 5 performance.

Lexical Resource: Band 5.0

The vocabulary used is limited and basic, demonstrating minimal adequacy for discussing the topic. The writer frequently repeats fundamental terms such as 'entertainment', 'theaters', and 'cinemas' without employing a wider range of synonyms. There are also noticeable lexical errors and awkward collocations, such as 'facility like good internet connection', 'facility of internet', and 'adopt the advance technology' instead of 'advanced technology'. While the meaning is generally communicated, the lack of flexibility and precision in word choice prevents the response from achieving a higher band, placing it firmly at Band 5.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.0

The essay displays a very limited range of grammatical structures, relying heavily on simple sentences or faulty complex constructions. Frequent grammatical errors occur throughout the text, including missing articles ('in the theaters', 'from every place'), incorrect prepositions, and awkward phrasing such as 'how they can watch the entertainment' and 'such that think'. Punctuation is also problematic, notably the omission of question marks on direct questions used as statements, as seen in 'so why do we need to invest in theaters and cinemas.' These frequent errors cause occasional difficulty for the reader and reflect the descriptors for Band 5.
