Student answer (Band 4.5)

there are several reasons why people consider theatres and cinemas less important nowadays. First of all, online platforms provide convenient and inexpensive access to a vast amount of entertainment. People can watch films, television programmes, concerts and other forms of content from the comfort of their homes. In addition, digital services allow viewers to choose what they want to watch and when they want to watch it. This flexibility is particularly attractive to people with busy lifestyles. Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 4.5

The response attempts to discuss both views regarding the importance of theatres and cinemas in the digital age, presenting initial ideas about online streaming services and home entertainment. However, the development becomes highly repetitive and fragmented in the latter half of the text, with simplistic phrasing such as 'some people don't like to watch any show or movies in cinema'. Furthermore, the candidate fails to provide a clear personal opinion as explicitly required by the prompt. Crucially, the response falls short of the mandatory word count, containing only 208 words compared to the minimum requirement of 250 words. This under-length penalty restricts the task achievement score, as the arguments cannot be fully explored or extended. To improve, the candidate must expand their ideas with detailed explanations and examples, ensure all parts of the prompt are fully answered, and write at least the minimum required word count.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 5.0

The text begins with a reasonably logical paragraph structure, utilizing cohesive devices such as 'First of all', 'In addition', and 'Furthermore' to link ideas about digital platforms. However, the progression completely breaks down in the second half of the response. The text shifts abruptly into a series of short, disjointed sentences lacking logical transitions, such as 'But some people like to watch the movies and the other shows in the cinema.' Paragraphing is poorly handled, as the entire second half is lumped into a single messy block of text rather than being organized into distinct paragraphs for each viewpoint and the personal opinion. Pronoun referencing and conjunctions are also misused or overused, particularly 'Because' and 'on the internet', which creates a repetitive and confusing reading experience.

Lexical Resource: Band 4.5

The vocabulary used throughout the essay is basic, repetitive, and often inaccurate. While the opening paragraph shows a limited attempt at topic-related vocabulary like 'digital platforms', 'vast amount of entertainment', and 'immersive experience', the rest of the text relies on heavily repeated words, such as 'internet', 'mobile', 'movies', and 'things'. There are noticeable spelling and word choice errors, including 'Beacuse' instead of 'because' and 'mobiles phone'. The range of vocabulary is insufficient to discuss the topic with precision, preventing the candidate from achieving a higher band score. To improve, the candidate should expand their lexical range with more sophisticated synonyms and ensure accurate spelling and word formation.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 4.5

The essay displays a very limited range of grammatical structures. The opening paragraph contains some simple and moderately complex sentences that are mostly understandable, though they still contain minor awkwardness. However, as the text progresses into the second half, grammatical control deteriorates significantly. There are frequent errors in verb tense, subject-verb agreement, and sentence structure, such as 'we have a mobiles phone we can all the things' and 'which you wants, like actions movies'. Punctuation and capitalization are also erratic, with missing capital letters at the beginning of sentences and incorrect spacing around punctuation marks. These frequent errors cause strain and confusion for the reader.
