Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 5.5

The response addresses all parts of the prompt by discussing both views on the importance of theatres and cinemas in the digital age and providing a clear personal opinion. The student outlines the perspective that streaming services save time and money, and contrasts this with the cultural and economic benefits of live theatres and cinemas. However, the ideas are relatively basic and lack sufficient depth or specific supporting examples. For instance, the reference to Hindu religious plays is brief and under-developed, preventing the response from reaching a higher band. Nevertheless, a clear position is maintained throughout, satisfying the core requirements for a Band 6.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 5.0

The essay is organised into four paragraphs with a clear overall structure, including an introduction, two body paragraphs representing opposing views, and a conclusion. However, cohesion within and between sentences is often faulty and mechanical. There are numerous punctuation and capitalisation errors (e.g. starting sentences with lowercase letters like 'it is argued' and 'i belive') which disrupt the flow. Furthermore, transitional phrases are sometimes repetitive or awkwardly integrated. Paragraphing is present and appropriate for the task, but the lack of smooth referencing and logical progression limits the coherence to a Band 5.

Lexical Resource: Band 5.0

The student uses a sufficient range of vocabulary to convey basic ideas, attempting some less common items such as 'contemporary world', 'streaming platforms', and 'economically and culturally'. However, there are frequent word-choice errors, spelling mistakes, and awkward collocations throughout the text. Examples include 'bothe', 'culture' instead of cultural, 'rise economy' instead of raise or boost the economy, 'becuse', 'many content', and 'on online'. While these errors do not completely impede communication, they are noticeable and constrain the lexical score to Band 5.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.0

The writer attempts a mix of simple and complex sentence structures, such as concessive clauses starting with 'although' and conditional/causal links. However, grammatical accuracy is weak, with frequent errors in subject-verb agreement, preposition use, and sentence boundary punctuation, such as run-on sentences (e.g., 'without pay any cost it is very beneficial'). There are also persistent issues with capitalization and basic article usage. While the meaning is usually retrievable, the high frequency of grammatical mistakes means the structures cannot be considered generally accurate, placing this firmly at Band 5.
