Student answer (Band 5.0)

Opinions are divided on whether cinemas may be irrelevant in future as all the content is now consumed online while others reject this notion and argue that theatres and cinemas are still vital for both economically and culturally. This essay will discuss both views before presenting my opinion.

Some people argue that in this modern digital world everything is now available on smartohones. Entertainment is one of the kind as films and dramas are widely available on internet. For instance, Netflix and Amazon Prime are two companies widely known for its vast range of content. Moreover, people can consume entertainment any time of the day on these platforms as these applications give freedom to their users so that these companies continusously replacing classic cinema culture.

On the other hand, people still believe that theatres and cinemas are still provide better expereince. Furthermore, people connects these facilites with the livelihood of a specific community such as artists. For example, in theatres local artists perform on regular basis which is the major source of their income. In addition, in some places cinemas and theatres are the main reason of tourism which give economical benefits to other businesses. Theatres also hold a significant value in most of the cultures.

In my opinion, we cannot deny the fact that theatres and cinemas provide better experience and also a major source of income for many families.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 5.0

The response addresses both views required by the prompt, discussing the perspective that cinemas are outdated alongside the counter-argument concerning cultural and economic importance. You also provide your own opinion in the conclusion. However, the task achievement is hindered significantly by two major issues. First, the text is under length, containing 231 words against the required 250-word minimum. Second, your stated opinion is somewhat brief and underdeveloped, failing to fully extend your stance. For instance, the conclusion merely states: 'in my opinion, we cannot deny the fact that theatres and cinemas provide better experience and also a major source of income', which lacks depth. Because the word count requirement was not met and the ideas are somewhat limited, a band 5.0 is appropriate.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 5.5

The essay is divided into four standard paragraphs, showing an attempt at a logical structure with an introduction, two body paragraphs, and a conclusion. However, cohesion is frequently faulty and mechanical. You rely on basic transitional phrases such as 'For instance', 'Moreover', and 'On the other hand', but referencing is sometimes unclear or awkward, as seen in 'people connects these facilites with the livelihood'. Paragraphing is present, but the overall progression of ideas is slightly disrupted by repetitive phrasing and inadequate cohesive devices. While the text is coherent overall, the mechanical linking and errors in referencing restrict it to a band 5.5.

Lexical Resource: Band 5.0

Your vocabulary range is limited and minimally adequate for the task. You attempt some less common items such as 'livelihood', 'economical benefits', and 'classic cinema culture', but there are noticeable spelling and word choice errors throughout the text. For example, you wrote 'smartohones' instead of smartphones, 'continusously' instead of continuously, and 'expereince' instead of experience. Additionally, there is a grammatical collocation error in the introduction: 'vital for both economically and culturally' should use nouns or parallel adjectives ('economically and culturally'). Because these lexical errors cause some minor difficulty and the vocabulary is repetitive ('cinemas and theatres', 'entertainment'), the response achieves a band 5.0.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.0

You display a mix of simple and complex sentence forms, attempting structures like 'Opinions are divided on whether cinemas may be irrelevant in future as all the content is now consumed online...'. However, grammatical accuracy is weak, featuring frequent errors such as subject-verb agreement issues ('theatres and cinemas are still provide'), missing articles ('on internet' instead of 'on the internet'), and incorrect preposition use. Furthermore, sentence boundaries and punctuation are occasionally handled poorly, resulting in run-on sentences. While communication is not entirely impeded, the high frequency of errors across your sentences keeps your score at a band 5.0.
