Some people say that in the digital age, theatres and cinemas are no longer important as people can watch all the entertainment they want online. Others argue that theatres and cinemas are still important both economically and culturally.

Discuss both these views and give your own opinion.

Give reasons for your answer and include any relevant examples from your own knowledge or experience.

Student answer (Band 5.5)

Opinions are divided on whether cinemas may be irrelevant in the future as all the content is now consumed online, while others reject this notion and argue that theatres and cinemas are still vital both economically and culturally. This essay will discuss both views before presenting my opinion.

Some people argue that in this modern digital world, everything is now available on smartphones. Entertainment is one of the kinds of content available, as films and dramas are widely available on the internet. For instance, Netflix and Amazon Prime are two companies widely known for their vast range of content. Moreover, people can consume entertainment at any time of the day on these platforms, as these applications give freedom to their users, so these companies continuously replace classic cinema culture.

On the other hand, people still believe that theatres and cinemas still provide a better experience. Furthermore, people connect these facilities with the livelihood of a specific community, such as artists. For example, in theatres, local artists perform on a regular basis, which is the major source of their income. In addition, in some places, cinemas and theatres are the main reason for tourism, which gives economic benefits to other businesses.

In my opinion, we cannot deny the fact that theatres and cinemas provide a better experience and are also a major source of income for many families. Artists can play a role here in which they can produce content that is popular among the younger generation. In my view, outdated content is the main reason for the decline of these amenities.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 5.5

The response addresses all parts of the prompt by discussing both views on the future of theatres and cinemas versus online platforms and clearly presents the writer's own opinion in the introduction and conclusion. Ideas are relevant, with the first body paragraph focusing on the convenience and popularity of streaming services like Netflix, and the second body paragraph highlighting the economic and cultural value of live venues and local artists. However, the ideas could be extended further with deeper examples and more robust analysis to reach a higher band level. For instance, the conclusion introduces a new idea regarding 'outdated content' rather than fully synthesising the main points discussed previously. Overall, the task is addressed adequately and a clear position is maintained throughout, fitting the Band 6 descriptors well.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 5.5

The essay displays a coherent overall arrangement with a logical progression of ideas. Each paragraph has a clear focus: the introduction outlines the scope of the essay, the first body paragraph presents the view supporting digital platforms, the second body paragraph outlines the counter-argument regarding economic and cultural importance, and the final paragraph delivers the writer's conclusion. Cohesive devices are used to connect ideas, such as 'On the other hand', 'Furthermore', and 'In addition'. However, some transitions feel a bit mechanical or repetitive in structure. Paragraphing is used appropriately to separate distinct themes, but referencing and logical flow between sentences could be smoother to achieve a higher score.

Lexical Resource: Band 5.5

The student uses an adequate range of vocabulary for the task, successfully incorporating terms such as 'relevant', 'entertainment', 'livelihood', and 'amenities'. There are attempts to use less common vocabulary like 'subsequent' or specific industry terms, but some word choices and collocations feel slightly generic or repetitive, such as the repeated use of 'widely available' and 'content'. Spelling and word formation are generally accurate, and occasional errors do not impede communication. To reach a Band 7, the writer would need to demonstrate a wider, more flexible range of lexical items with greater precision and awareness of natural collocations.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.5

The essay features a mix of simple and complex sentence forms, demonstrating control over basic structures and attempting more intricate constructions such as 'Opinions are divided on whether cinemas may be irrelevant in the future as all the content is now consumed online...'. There are some grammatical errors and awkward phrasings, such as 'Entertainment is one of the kinds of content available', but these errors are infrequent and rarely impede communication. Punctuation is generally handled correctly, supporting the overall readability of the text. The variety of structures places this writing comfortably within the Band 6 criteria.
